Question about 14 year old apprentices

I wanted to post this in the 18 for General's License but it's locked. Anyway, Does a 16 year old have to retain sponsership for the additional 2 years (16-18) while they're waiting for General's age requirements? A potential sponser for me wasn't sure, his son is in this situation. He's a medical doctor and very busy so I'd thought I ask here. thanks in advanced.

yes you do have to wait, i was an apprentice for 4 years

I think what he means is after the first two years, does he have to stay under a sponsor, or can he be an apprentice for the last two years without a sponsor...
