For my Extension Art Project, my school gave me permission to create a crossbow, here is the prototype so far:
First off, heres the Paint drawings
Red is trigger (includes dark red) blue is springs (didnt use springs, i may later though) dark green is the prod (bow) and light green is the bowstring
i used NO modern tools! (the drill in the picture was being used by timm earlier in the day, i just didnt care to move it lol)
heres the stock after it was cut out:
small aint it? i dont want a gargantun one!
the chisseled out insides where the trigger goes!
these are the holes where the "firing pins" will be, the bowstring goes behind these, and the bolt (arrow) fits in the middle. yes i know they arnt properly a lined...
These be thy trigger!
trigger in place (the drills are used to show the firing pins, the pins will be dowl when i really make this and they will be much much smaller.) ready to fire:
Fire!
if you look at the drawing, and how the trigger is made, what happens is, when it is up, the top of the trigger holds the pins in place, the tension on the bowstring, and springs [if i add them] will help keep the trigger stable and prevent accidental discharge. when the trigger is pulled, the pins lose where they stand and will fall!

Comments? critism? etc etc...
REMEMBER!! THIS IS THE PROTOTYPE!! i have till june to make/finish the real one!
where did you get your materials to build that? only because if it was home depot... as an employee in the lumber department i must say bravo. and that home depot is not liable for any accidents you may have with that.
(NOTE: all nails will be trimmed with exception of the trigger one)
First off, here is what i started with:
wooo! part of a log! wicked!
now... heres what i tried doing:
heres my "ok f*** this! im using a wood splitter!" look:
After splitting i got this thing:
and after some hitting it with the hatchet, shaving it, and sanding it, it slowly started to take form!
(sry, no real form pics. forgot to take them! and im quite lazy right now to go get the camera)
The block of which the trigger came:
the trigger!
The trigger "case":
Trigger installed:
time log:
~30minutes to get a piece of the log usable for construction ~60 minutes to shave, create trigger case and smooth ~30 minutes to install, modify, edit, and dork around with trigger total: ~120 minutes = ~2 hours of worktime
prototype constuction time: ~4 hours
~ all time total construction time so far: ~6 hours
(actually managing to hurt self after you are already done working by tripping and falling: Priceless)
Matt
PS: ill get a full picture of everything later...
tomorrow includes: running around a forest in search of the perfect prod [bow] limb! more shaving, more altering, and finishing trigger and trigger casing
First off... the failed, yet really cool lookn release i made:
basically, a string would connect to the straight end of the curved piece of piping, that string would go via hole to the trigger, the trigger when pulled would pull the string down, thus pulling up the release!
too bad it opened to easily when applied by pressure.
mmm ahh smooth:
you can kinda see in the middle where it curves, that and a bit more under it form a nice grip for your hand.
remember the old trigger? 2 'firing pins'? well this will have one, and the crank on this one will look like this
finally, i carved this fun into it tonight!
im gonna make a few more before actually making the one i will turn in.
~ hours worked on today 2.5
6+2.5= 8.5 hours total.
also, i found 2 nice sections of log to make 2 more crossbow stocks... ill wait to find a nice prod when i make the true crossbow.
