I live in Toas, NM. I am homeschooled and have plenty of time for a hawk. I called in to get my packet, but it isn't here yet. I have read the whole book of Understanding the Bird of Prey. I am half way through the California Hawking Club Study Guide. I just bought the Falconry Equipment by Bryan Kimsley and Jim Hodge, and The Red Tailed Hawk by Liam McGranaghan. I think I am almost ready to take the test. ;D

Hey Chicken Hunter I guess you have already Taken the test here in New Mexico I was wondering if you could give me some pionters on what to expect. I have read CHC book and done all the online Falconry Exams. Read books from Frank Breebe Liam M. William Oaks and then some. I should take my test anytime but I just want to be fully Prepared.
If there are any online exams that you know about please post them.
Mike, the only thing i can say about the test is it was Much more difficult than i anitcipated...a friend of mine had a neveda practice test and i aced that one, but the Nm test was a bunch trickier, only about 1/2 of the questions had to do with flying a redtail at the apprentice level, the rest were natural history, ecology, identification, health, etc...and i know we need to know this stuff, but it doesn't make the test any more fun..i honestly just BARELY passed the thing. the only advice i could give would be study, study, study....then when you think you're ready, study some more! good luck, you already sound like you're more prepared than i was.... ;D -Nate-

Ok, you guys, what's the deal in NM? I've done a search on this site and on Yahoo, and only found teasing deadend hints towards a New Mexico Falconry Association. I was thinking it would be fun to hook up with my neighbors sometime. What do you guys have going on over there? Do you even have meets?
...ok, I found the Yahoo group and have applied for membership...

We had a fall duck meet down near silver city and there is usually a rabbit meet up near ABQ from what i've heard. Nothing that i know of is planned anytime soon except maybe a picnic this summer up in ABQ. Raptrlvr and I are here in silver city if you're looking to come chase rabbits around.

Thanx, FB I don't have my bird anymore, I'll be trapping for a bigger jacksmasher this Fall. But that sounds cool, keep me posted on the picnic. You're actually about the same distance as all the AZ events that happen up by Phoenix.. with less of the city driving!
You can jump on the 10 freeway and head east to Deming. Our {FB and I} hawking grounds are just north of Deming. Lots of game here and no other falconers to contend with. I think there are only about 32 active falconers in New Mexico.
Just 32? That explains it. It looks like a pretty quick shot from here, how much longer will you be flying? I might be able to figure something in later this month. FB, where are you going in May?
I'll be flying for a while. I am going to continue to fly the HH on rabbits for about another week or so and then I'll switch her to feathers to see how she does. The eagle is ready to fly. I weighed him this morning and he was 6 lbs 10 ozs. He will fly when he is at 6 lbs 8 ozs. If you need a place to stay overnight or for a couple of days, my wife and I have plenty of room with an extra bedroom all set up for guest.. Just let us know in advance. This next weekend I am supposed to go up north for a camping trip to look for peregrine eyrie's.

So, did you induce the molt over the winter then? I'm sorry if this has already been talked about and I missed it somewhere... I would like to see all the feilds in the pictures you keep posting....
No, I did not induce the molt over the winter. The HH dropped a tail feather today, but, I didn't start flying her until Dec, so, I'll fly her for a while longer. the eagle doesn't get put away for the molt. It takes about 3 years for a complete molt on him.

Ah, I see.
I'm considering figuring out how to sneak over there the last weekend of this month. Either that or sometime in the second half of May. Do you think that would work out? What if I bring a friend? Should I PM you about this?
