I live in Canton Ga. I havent started any paperwork yet. I will be ordering my books tonight to start studying. I have thought of becoming a falconer for many years but it seems I finally cant get it out of my head. I am an avid hunter/outdoorsman and love the idea of hunting with a feathered partner. I usually hunt deer and turkey but could definitley get into rabbit and squirel. I am very familiar with a number of WMA's in the area, so I guess thats where I will hunt with a raptor. Question----Whats the timeframe on the government red tape and permits? I was in the Air Force so I know they can take their sweet time when it comes to paperwork. The reason I ask is, is it futile for me to attempt to get all the nessisary stuff done and submit everything ASAP and have a bird by the winter? Or should I just take my time and plan on doing it a little along the way and plan on a raptor for next year? (fall of 2011) Just curious. Thanks for any help. And sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot.
hookedonhunting... i started getting my stuff together for georgia for the 2009 season in october. passed my test in nov trapped a bird in dec and was hunting by jan. you have plenty of time. have you located a sponsor?? go to the georgia falconry association.com and call someone from the directors list and they will help you find someone who might sponsor you from your area. good luck. let me know if you got any other questions.

Wow. You did it on the fast track. Heck, I am still waiting on my books. I am just reading a lot on line. Trying to learn terms. Thanks for the info. I dont feel so bad about the timing now. I have not located a sponser (not looking yet), but I have found the Georgia Falconry Association. I will join them soon and come to the next meeting they have. Again, thanks for the info. Do you live in North Ga? I am in Canton. I would love to come out for a visit just to watch and see what a day in the life is. Let me know.
no i actually live about an hour south of atlanta. and right now is the boring part. letting the bird moult. so a day in the life involves changing the water, feeding and cleaning the mews once a week. not very exciting. a good book to study from is a Falconry Manual. by Frank Beebe. the only info it doesnt really include is health and sickness and stuff like that. otherwise it was pretty good and pretty cheap. there are a few people that i believe live up your way so you need maybe try to make a few phone calls. you might wanna go ahead and start trying to get a sponser. gives you a little more time to be on good terms. it helps to get along with them. they are there for more than to just go over a checklist and tell you what to do. just make sure its something you really wanna commit to before you go into it. i dont believe its for some people. but for others its an addiction. (figure of speech)
Bumping an old thread! I'm looking to move back to GA! Was Raised in Barrow County (near Athens) but I'm actively looking at taking a position in Atlanta (and live in Gwinnett)
Hey folks...just getting started on this journey...I'm in the southern most part of Georgia(Valdosta)...looking to find someone near me to help me out and possibly sponsor me...so far haven't found anyone closer than 2hrs and that's just to far for regular visits...
