Day old chicks can be used for a food source as long as other whole animals are provided. I raised some chickens and quail this year. I however, only used the day olds every once in a while. I used my brown button quial as baggies for my kbird, she loved them.
DOC are the norm over here and providing you add the correct supplements are ok. They are good for weight control during the season but do not forget the odd Rat or quail.
If i could i would breed Guinea pigs..Breed like rabbits and are a good source of food!
WHEN THE 'EAGLES' ARE SILENT THE 'PARROTS' BEGIN TO JABBER! SIR W.CHURCHILL
I knew a fellow form Peru who's family raised Guinea pigs or cavies for food. He said they were great. I'd have to be real hungry. Besides that they are really cute. Even I would pause at killing them for hawk food. I'd like to raise quail or rabbits commercially, but my property is zoned residential.
FB - how come you hate guinea pigs? I personally will never feed Guinea's to a raptor... 1) I have 4 of them, and they are the sweetest, most personable little things. 2) Unless the raptor lives in South America, it's not gonna run into a guinea. Quail, Pheasant, Rabbit, Hare, Squirrel, etc... Sure, even the odd Chick. But no Guinea's out there.
I know the rule with feeding is to keep the diet the same as what they would in the wild. Other than their typical diet of what they hunt, is it ok for the occasional super market meats? I.E. chicken drumsticks, chicken breast, etc?
Shipping is a killer with RodentPro. Luckily, they come to a show that is held once a month here in Columbus, Ohio. Thus, I can place my order online and pick it up at the show. Works out pretty well, since the online prices are also cheaper than if I tried to buy the stuff at the show without pre-ordering. You should see if there are any Reptile shows in your area, as they would probably have vendors selling some frozen stuffs. Also, if you have a university nearby, check with their Research Labs and see where they get their mice. Often times these places have an overabundance of lab mice that they weren't able to sell to the labs and they give them away by the hundreds. Or, if you're near an egg or poultry farm (I'm talking about the big producing farms, so you may have to drive an hour or so) you can probably pick up DOCs for around 5 cents a piece. -Joe
