Well, I am just about ready to go out and trap my first Rt. All's I am waiting on now is for my federal paperwork to get back. I was going to order some food today for my bird and was wondering a couple of questions. I was gonna get some day old chicks and saw that the day old quail were only 10 cents more. Which one should I go with? Any advantages of one over the other?
I wanted to order some rats too. What quantity of would you all recommend ordering? Could someone suggest an order to put together with exactly what and how much I should order? Lastly, I was gonna order through rodent pro......any good, or anyone got another suggestion? Thanks in advance for the help.
i would go with 6 week old quail its the best as far as nutrition. rats are great too, docs are good for tidbits when training and hunting but not a good staple. i usually order about 50 quail and that usually lasts for around 5-6 months.
When i first started i think i was way too excited i had live rabbits and rats and mice in cages and quail in the frezzer..its slowly evolved too just the frozen quail and the rabbits he kills, i also use vitahawk 3 days a week. it works great for us. 6 week old quail have all the nutrients the bird will need if you feed it whole, (feathers bones etc.)
yea, you can, i would just cut open a quail and cut out the heart and liver and some of the breast and cut it up in small little pieces and tidbit that way,, but one thing you have to remember is quail is very high in protein and it takes longer to burn off... i would also use beef heart soaked in water in the fridge overnite if i was trying to drop his weight.

I always order from rodentpro. Quality is top notch and i have never heard of anyone having a problem with them.
Chicks can be messy. The best way is to use each leg, wing, and head as a tidbit, then put the bodies on the lure. That keeps the mess on the ground and not on the glove.
MODOC, i personally don't feed washed meat, but if you do please be careful with it.

Sounds like I will be going w/rodentpro. What are the differences between doc's and doq's? I was thinking of throwing together an order with either chicks or quail, some rats, and maybe some 6 wk old quail. What size rats do people use? I was thinking adults cut up, but I saw someone post that they use pups.

washed meat is void of most of the nutrients that could weigh a heavy hawk down prolonging its weight loss, and should only be used cautiously. I should have stated that. It is a way to tidbit in early training if the hawk needs to be droped down in weight. the hawk feels like hes getting a nice meal while actually hes getting meat that will burn off quickly. and should only be done with your sponsors advice.
