Anyone ever dealt with bruised tarsi? My bird has a black area on the lowwer right tarsus. At first i thought is was just dye from his anklets and because there was on on the other leg too, but i checked it out again today and it looks a little swollen and one of the scales is starting to come off. the jesses are the same length and my sponsor uses the same anklets made from the same leather for his birds.
I'd massage it with Neosporin and see a vet ASAP. Swelling is an indication of possible infection. Raptors have low blood flow in their feet and legs making infection difficult to fight.
hi list first time on, i trapped a male kestrel (100 g) and he was bitten by a mouse that i was feeding him, now i noticed all the talons on left leg are retracted, right leg OK. i washed and cleaned area, and rubbed antibodies on toes and legs. he has been eating well, mute are good, and weight at 80g removed Jesse on left leg. any other ideals and could this be a sign of bumble foot.
If he has calmed down with you being around and isn't bating a lot in your company, then I would be hesitant to drop his weight with foot injuries. Keep him fed up until things seem to be back to normal and then start bringing him down. That's just my opinion but there should be other thoughts from members that have had more experience with foot injuries. You could try sending Falco or Wolf a PM they have had some experience with K-birds.
Good luck Jetblue319!

Umm, If the talons are closed and cannot open by themselves, that is a very serious problem. I don't have much experience with K-birds but I know something about bites. It sounds to me like something got cut. Now it could be just trauma but that is not my first thought. Get him to a vet. Yarak
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away

Get his weight back up and get him to a vet. If all the talons will not open then there is possible nerve damage or at least compression of the nerves. Where is the cut? in the tarsus or in the upper leg. The muscles and nerves that move the talons are in the upper leg. There are sensory nerves in the talons. If the tendon sheath in the tarsus has been cut you really need to get it to a vet. Let us know how things go.

You mean antibiotics right?
If you don't have an anklet on one of his feet make sure he doesn't bate at all. Do You have a picture?
Does he still use his leg normally or is it in pain?
If it is hot it is a sign of infection and as mentioned really needs some vet care as the foot infections/injuries are slow to heal. You really don't want to have some dead flesh from necrotic tissue around the wound as it will just make it worse. Sometimes this needs to be cut away surgically...
not sure how bad the bite is or exactly what you mean by the scales being retracted... but it sounds likes swelling which is also a sign of infection as well as the normal healing.
