Ok, it may seem silly to ask this, seeing as you really only hear about it for parrots and such. but Teflon on pans, the non stick surface, gives off a gas when its heated, this gas is toxic, apparently, i just found this out, to ALL living creatures.
hmm... Anyone ever hear about death by teflon in a BoP?

the Teflon has to be heated allot to make the gas so unless you just leave the pan on the stove for a long while and burn the hell out of it you have no worries. although the thing that will make the birds sick is fabreeze. I have heard of birds dying from that

Although I have not heard of a BoP dying from Teflon my friend's Gouldian Finches died from a Teflon pan overheating and they weren't even in the same room. I'm sure a BoP could die from it since I have heard of macaws and other big parrots not making it through Teflon fumes. Since we have parrots and a BoP we got rid of all our Teflon. It's not worth taking a chance.

well common since dont over heat the pan. any pan thats that hot you aren't going to be cooking food in but also dont leave the kitchen unattended thats how fires start
Just dont use Teflon. If burnt it can also flake tiny bits off into your food and cause illness to humans. And since we can't detect the harmful gases, it can be hard to tell if the pan is being overheated sufficiently to give them off. if you have any type of birds you just shouldnt use it.

I'd heard about the Teflon and we now use stainless steel. I hadn't heard about Fabreeze, we'll have to stop using that. My wife loves the plug in air fresheners, any concerns with those? I guess it would be better to discontinue use just to be safe.

Overheated Teflon can and will kill any bird that breathe the vapor. I lost a pair of cockatiels, a pair of budgies and a crow to Teflon. In my case what happened is the wife was cooking a chicken pot pie. The direction called for it to bake at something like 450 for 55 minutes. They recommended you place it on a cookie sheet to catch anything that would drip. From what I remember, the pot pie had been in the oven about 40 minutes when I notice the budgies having breathing issues. I had no idea what was going on. Next I notice the cockatiels having problems. At that point I figured it had to be something inside so I move everyone outside. The crow was the next thing to start having problems. Within 20 minutes I went from all five birds looking fine to 5 dead birds.
I set a couple of them off for a necropsy. The Vet concluded it was the Teflon overheating that caused the death. If I remember correctly he said the Teflon pans will give off fluoride gas when the Teflon reaches a temperature of 535 degrees. In our case, our oven was notoriously bad at temperature control and must have crept up past that temperature. Our birds were in 3 different rooms. The crow was in fact on the far side of the house.
The lessons I learned
It doesn’t take much gas from a Teflon pan to kill birds
The gas will move throughout the house with ease if there is any kind of ventilation or air movement in the house.
Using the pans in a normal fashion is not always safe.
If you use Teflon with the birds in the house you can lose them.

it is polytetrafluoroethlyene (PTFE) intoxication the safest met is to not use teflon at all but sometimes the cook wont listen luckily I dont have that problem
I'm sure it's not good for any living thing to breath the teflon fumes. It just that birds are more sensative.
Think about the miners canary. The miners still got cancer from black lung but if the canary died you should get out for awhile and ventilate the mine.
