well my bird has it. wow.. what a bummer. i took RIP to the vet yesterday as a wound on his face that i thought was from maybe scratching at his hood was actually avian pox. it is a virus only able to get to accips and buetos. falcons do not get this kind. pretty much it is like when we get chicken pox. only instead of taking 2 weeks to get rid of it like we do the raptors take up to 6 months. he now has them on his face and feet. they generally pose only on unfeathered skin. ill get pics up for you all later. its not like leprosy but it is not pretty. so ill put rip up for the season and get him starting on free lofting now and get him going for the molt in a couple months. i will keep this bird for a few seasons as he is very fast and agile. we have had 12 hunts and 11 of those where all successfull with one head and some i did doubles. poor guy. well at least he has a chance better since he is in my care as this kills around 50% of infected wild birds.

treatment wise there really is nothing that can be done. the bird just has to work its way through it. just like if we had chicken pox. the main thing is to remove the scabs and use iodine or bedadine to stop secondary infection. these birds have a 50 percent chance of servival in the wild but a 90 in captivity. RIP will be just fine. he is eating well and still has his quirky attitude. ill try another hunt this week and then i think i will put him up for the season. ive started trapping pigeons and have a few permission places to do that now too. as far as pics ill do my best it may be a while. i use the internet at the library and it isnt easy to find a place to post, but ill do my best.
thanks for the concerns guys, all of us keeping up with each other will be an enormous help when future birds get sick. RIP is a trooper, too bad he has to be a guinea pig.

ok guys. wow wolf, that pic of the foot issue is not good. my bird hasnt gotten that bad. mostly on the face but for the most part is gone now. ill post a pic of it. it attatched itself on the edge of the cere on the beak. the one on the left side of the face is gone and the one on the right is almost gone. the feet are looking better too. soon he will have his big boy feathers and that shoulod help shed the rest of the virus.

Dang Wolf, I thought I had sent you only pics of Deuce's pox infected feet not the the other one. Who is that rough looking "old guy" ? Wish I had taken pics of his feet after he recovered. He had scars where the biggest sores were, but outside talon was growing back. Betadine healed sores, but dried the skin on his feet and they bled constantly. I put Bag Balm dairy cow ointment on them and he healed up nicely with a rich diet of trapped city squirrels and Vitahawk sprinkled on. Point should be they will recover fully when treated.
