Thanks. Am seeing further improvement tonight, I plan on contuing to rest him. May be able to fly him on Tues. I'm so relieved. I'm as excited as if I'd just trapped a new bird. To top it all, my application for upgrade to General License has been submitted to USFWS.

Shadow received a bite the other day that was a good one. I gave her about three days to mend up which is usually what I give her. I took her flying today for mainly exercises and she ended up catching a squirrel. Well I figured that if I took her out there would be a good chance but I figure that I could just make in really fast. Which I did I was over her and kneeling down before she actually made it to the ground. Upon touch down the squirrel was on the anklet moving to off for something else and I grabbed his head before he connected. Great used my pick traded her off did a quick check on feet while she was sitting next to me. No big deal a little squirrel blood but that was it. Flew her back to the car put her up nd went home. When I got home took her out to wash her up and do a closer look and her old wound was puffy and bleeding a little. so I did some hydro therapy and medicated the wound. Decided to feed her up since Now I'm going to put her on a 1 full week break to make sure that wound heals and to see how she is using it. Well she is not wanting to use it much. After her meal I washed her up and put her in the box and went with my wife to her Christmas party. Got home Checked her again and there was a little blood. I pulled her out and casted her did some hydro therapy. Which helps the swelling and if done everyday helps the healing process. I let it air dry and scab some while I messaged the lower portion of the killer toe to see if I could get it to retract some. Which it did so that is a little bit of a relief. I put some cream on and put her in the hood. Now if I don't see any improvement by Monday when I get home then off to the vet I will go. I will be doing a hydro treatment 3times a day till and bactrodrem cream once. Since I think she just hit it and it doesn't look like the squirrel bit it I think she just really hit it and it swell/opened up and is sore. I will keep y'all posted.-Zach

OK, after cleaning her up I feel a bit better. #1 is in good shape it should heal clean and quickly. #2 on the other hand is not so good. It was not bitten just once but twice. There are four punctures along the side. It looks pretty gnarly. This is the same toe that had the tendon re-attached. It works. She used it just fine to foot the tooth brush. She now has the left foot pulled way up inside her feathers. With a full crop she looks no worse for wear. I cleaned all the perching surfaces and renewed her bath pan. I hope like all the previous bites these too will heal and give us no further cause for concern. Yarak

Steps can be implemented to expedite the healing. Hydro-therapy will certainly help. I will fly her banged up. She is tough. As long as the toes work she will continue to kill. She is hard-core. I can afford to give her some time to recover from the initial wound, but in the wild she would not have that luxury. Yarak

Casting the bird and holding the foot that was bitten under warm running water for about 15 minutes. Do this daily. The warming of the effected area stimulates blood flow. That in turn increases healing. I just learned this from T78 yesterday. Yarak

I did not believe it at first until i saw it done on a HH in ohio that had broke its leg. They used hydro therapy on the wound where it was stitched and it went from looking like it would never heal to working perfectly now. I did not believe it would work until i heard about how well this HH recovered.

Hello, I am new to this forum so I though I would say howdy!
I don’t think anyone fully explored the wound cleaning solutions.
If you are going to be cleaning a wound I would use Chlorhexidine, Nolvasns. They have a low level of toxicity, are not inactivated by organic materials and have residual activity on skin. These are commonly used for surgical scrub and wound irrigation. Iodine can be used but it is a tissue irritant and is inactivated by organics. I would not use H2O2. It is inactivated by organic material, is cytotoxic and should only be used on intact skin.

My female HH got bit by a cat. Took her to the vet right away. I arrived at the vet's office and when we got Hope down and checked her breast there were scratches on the breast and one small hole where the claw had broken the skin. Here is what we did for her: Injected her with 0.27cc of Clarforan - 300 mg/ml Applied Silver Sulfadiazine 1% Cr to the scratches, hole in the skin on the breast muscle, and hole in the foot Started her on Baytril Tabs 2 times per day 22.7 mg
