JF, I'm not tied to Merlin in any way other than I love their products. I've got a buddy who uses Marshall transmitters and he's had lots of problems with having to send it back in for repairs. I've used other transmitters, but the new Merlins are the best at the cheapest cost. -Joe
I just got a price list from Merlin and I guess they are a sister company for the people that make the R-400. They make a MS-400 that looks exactly the same for 365.00. They also have a kit with the Yagi, cable, and case for 465.00
I used to think i knew some things. But i'm not so sure anymore.
Anyone looking for telemetry? There is a mini-10 and 2 transmitters on the Raptorsnest for $400. That is a good deal. I paid $450 for my mini-10 without any transmitters.
I was reading the postings on Hunting Hawks and Richard in Colorado was using the new Scout transmitter on his gos. The gos went through a fence and the Scout got hung up and pulled the deck feathers out of the gos. Richard said his only complaint about the new Scout was that it was taller than the Rt transmitter that he used to use. He now is using a leg mount transmitter. I am just passing this information on and not passing judgement on the new Scout transmitter.

This could happen with any TX. Just the circumstances.
With the redtail and harris I have now the TX is completely covered by the covert feathers. The tail mount is as far up on the feather as possible. There is only 3/8 inch gap to the tail.
The reason for the height is simple, the Scout uses a CR2032 battery, available everywhere even at gas stations because they are used in Cameras, iPod clones, computers. No more special batteries. No more excuses for not hunting becuase you ran out of batteries

The Merlin's are inexpensive and I love my mini-FMV for small birds but they are not the cheapest in the UK anymore.
Here a mini-FMV costs £115, thats around $230 right now. The Scout is $135 thats around £70.
I just relayed the message without passing judgement. I am happy with my Merlin and all the other transmitters I have. I don't use my Marshall transmitters except on the eagle because the eagle is the only one with a tailmouint on him. Most of the time I use the L&L on the eagle.

I've used the transmitter from L&L Electronics for the last 20+ years and I love them. Unless they go out of business I'll keep using them. I cannot remember the model number but my most expensive transmitter reaches about 30 miles; 16 miles in thick dense trees and mountainous areas. It was super expensive and for the birds that stay closer I have a cheaper model from them. As vor train vs leg mount....I always use leg mount transmitters and I only put bells on the tarsi too. As mentioned above, any transmitter can get caught and pull the decks out and the people that put bells around a birds neck should be shot in my opinion! I've had falconers tell me they used a neck bell and it always ends with "and then it bolted from the fist through a barbed wire fence and it caught the bell and broke me birds neck......" time to shoot the retarded human! LOL
What do you think about the different receivers? I'm looking for a «basic» 5 channel 216mHz field marshall receiver, as I will be the only falconer in a 500km range and will fly a RT... Do you think it's better to invest more, or to buy from another company, for the kind of use I have in mind?
Hey if you got the money I've heard it's a real good receiver. If later you need more channels they can add them, but I don't think you will have a problem. I plan on buying a Marshall receiver and using my Merlin buttons in the future. The MN-10, R-400, and MS-400 are real good too and a little cheaper. The MN-10 has been around for a long time and is a proven receiver. I have a MN-10 right now and have used them a lot in the past. I like the Marshall but I think I'll keep my MN-10 for a back up when I get the Marshall.
