Me too. Especially everybody in this thread keeps saying NO DONT GET ONE. lol. BubbaGum which has been very helpful to me told me i should make my own except for maybe the bells. Which would be hard to make for a 13 year old. Anyways i cant wait until i take my test and go hunting in the field!!
Most things for a redtail can be made from material bought at hardware or farm stores. Digital scales can be bought on eBay for $50. Make up a sturdy perch to fit and zero it out. Buy a half a kangaroo hide or go in with someone on a whole hide. They can last forever if you don't cut a bunch of hood patterns. I personally feel that every apprentice should be required to use a cowhide welding glove for their first bird. You will appreciate that custom elkskin gauntlet sooo much more. PM me for the address of Jim Worley in Idaho. He makes the finest gauntlets bar none, at half of what the "big" stores sell them at. Two week turn around too !
All that said, I know an apprentice I respect very much who bought a kit, and is ,I believe, happy with it. Grendlesgirl looked great holding her big hen redtail on a nicely made gauntlet last year at IFA's field meet.
