I don't know how long my leash is, buy I made it long enough to reach my palm. My leash isn't quite as wide as FB's as I pulled a button in it, like a jess, and ran it through grommets in the cuff of my glove, I rarely use the D ring.
ok, i replaced mine, after hearing you guys about urs and talking to FB online.
i took a strip of leather, cut a slit in one end, a hole in the other, put it around the grommet, and ran one end through the hole. and then i basicly attached the clip like you would a swivel on jess, looks strong! the end of hte clip reaches half way up my pinky finger.
lose the chain your bird will tangle talons in it, use a french clip on one end and a snap on the other with a leather strap. You will use it and the D ring every time the bird is on the hand. Oil the strap with a 50/50 mix of beeswax and olive oil
Because that is the formula I like and have had good experience with. I can see you must have years of experience with french clips. Watch Manny Carrascos and Gary Brewers video. A lot of very successful dirt hawkers use them, but you are not a fan of them so use what you want. I am just telling someone what works in my experience. You are not using a french clip on a leash to stake out your bird. You are using it to quick clip your bird to your glove where you should be holding on to the jesses. Once you get a little experience you may see the beauty of a quick attachement. Then again you may never get it. ET
so beeswax and olive oil? does it basicly just take the place of say lanolin? or some other leather oil ( i know lanolin isnt a "leather oil"). basicly waterproofing it?
stay with clip you have I 've been using the same one I got from the tack store if it strong enough for the horses I figured it's strong enough for the bird. I also use it when teathering the bird. My thought is I'd rather that fail ( I connect straight to the jess as it's already swiveled) and my bird fligh off with out it's feet bound than to have the leash fail and the bird fly off dragging a bunch of crap behind it, and if that's not enough indorsement Frank Beebe llikes my set up as well. As for the chain ya I had some reservations on that too. Happier to see it gone.
i was wondering if that clip was safe enough to teather, i think id only do it in the mews or weathering if i did, i wouldnt trust it THAT much. and thats true, good thought on that, it makes sense, but then again, this clip is probably stronger then the clips they use on the "Y" set up. the half rings cross each other, so it basicly strengthens it when something is pulling on them becuase they way they close.
k cool, next time im at tandy leather, i need to go soon actually... ill check that out! so you can use it for jesses etc also? do u just rub on beeswax and then put olive oil on it? or what?
Melt the beeswax and stir in the olive oil until you get the mixture you want. I put less olive oil in hot weather and more in cold. You can pour in into an altoids tin to carry in your bag. Just rub the mixture into the leather or drop jesses into the melted mixture to throughly saturate them. I rub it into my hoods, jesses, glove or any other leather items I want to preserve and treat for water protection. My grandfather used to treat his saddles, bridles and harness leather with this along with all his gun leather and work boots. ET
