I have a question....... would this kit cover the basics of what you would need? www.tandyleather.com/products.asp?number=55510-00 you said to buy leather, and $100 in tools, but what tools? also pineo has kang hide for $14 ....
I wouldnt buy that kit becuase it comes with things that wont be of much use. I'd buy a few xacto knives, a rotary punch, and a few other things that rookhawk said.

Ethics make the individual, not the other way around.
You can get a bath pan for $5. A workable scales for $15 - 30. A side of leather will last you an eternity. If you can't get some one to teahch you how to make your equipment, there are books out there. I make everything myself, except hoods. It's really quite fun. The apprentice kits are great if you want to jump in there, get everything at once and be done with it. But they are not bargins by any stretch of the imagination.
BobDale, do you have any suggestions to which books can teach how to make falconry equipment? The book I'm reading right now (Falconry & Hawkingby Phillip Glasier) goes into it a little, I believe, but I'm not sure how much.

Then why are you looking at getting an apprentice kit? Make your own equipment! I'm pretty sure most people on this forum disagree with the idea of purchasing apprentice kits. It doesnt teach you anything. Most the equipment used in apprentice kits aren't the greatest anyhow.

The hardest part about making your equipment is knowing what kind of leather to buy, and where to buy it from.
I'm still working on that, but in the meantime, my sponsor showed me how to make jesses, anklets and leashes, and gave me a basic rundown of leather quality.
It's SUPER easy to make the basic stuff, and I'll bet hoods seem more intimidating than they really are...

Hi,
I don't want to hijack this interseting thread, but wondering how you find Falconry and Hawking by Glasier. I have just ordered this book being brand new. Hope it is ok!

I found it OK....you may also want to read books like:
Understanding the Bird of Prey Nick Fox (the vids are great too!)
The Red-tailed Hawk by ironically Liam McGranaghan
California hawking club study guide
The Compleat Falconer by Frank Beebe
A Falconry Manual by Frank Beebe
Reading about eagles, owls, falcons, etc is good info and should prove useful but reading about hawks will be better if you are getting a hawk. Buying some books about the species you think you will end up with as a started bird might provide some of the best info..
Many websites have a list of beginners books.
