Rage, I don't think that whether they are removable or not actually matters, A bird would have to be very dexterous to undo a removable chap in my opinion. Of course there's always a " Harris hawk " with it's Mensa I.Q. which will undo, take off & put back together the chap to make it look like the chap slipped off. The removable anklet, chaps that I am an advocate of makes my life with the bird easier. With regard to ' getting wet ', it'll dry out the same as an anklet would. You can't keep them formed to a specific shape even using glue & stitching them. If I had " permanent " on then, I'd have to cut off one to be replaced by the other. When Solomon suffers a " bad bite ", I've started exchanging chaps for anklets for a few days whilst he's put up in the mew. You decide what's best for the bird & you & go with that. Thanks to Rage & Weasel for the photo's posted.
The above picture, kindly posted for me ( manok ) by Falcon Boy is, a chap that I have yet to use. It's a heavier suede material than the pair currently on Solomon.
I have one of those HH's that will take off anything thats removeable. I like using removeable chaps and anklets. I finally made a jesse that once it slipped through the grommets it locked in place. I made it by taking a triangular piece of leather and riveting it to the jess, just in front of the "knot " of the jess. This way it slipped through the grommets easily sliding with the slope of the triangle. But once through the grommet the triangle piece unfolded and made it so that the grommets were stuck between the knot of the jess and the flat edge of the triangle.
jeffro, How about a photo of the jess you described ? How difficult is it to remove the jess ? Is the bird hood trained ? Is it hooded when you take the jess out ?
The bird isnt hood trained, but he is pretty cool about letting me have my hands around his feet.
They are a little bit of a pain to get out of the grommet. You have to take you thumb and your finger and pinch the triangular piece down to fold it over, then slide the jess out. It can be done with one hand but its easier with two.
was thinking about changing the design to where the triangle peice is just attached with a cable tie, then you could cut it off to remove the jess and easily replace it.
this one is a little tight but they can be trimmed to fit however you want. this one is a cable tie version so you could just cut the cable tie and easily remove it.

ive done that before only in one piece. made a dragon tail so that the bird couldnt pull the jesses. RIP was good at pulling jesses and tearing apart telemetry. I am sorry Sponsor....
i like the one piece way too. I like this way though because its so easy to remove them. This way or a one peice dragon tail can be hard to remove from the anklet. I like just snipping the cable tie and then pull out with one hand.
