Hi Lads....... Can you explain to me what the difference is.. Over here we have Rabbits and Hares. I caught a buck yesterday that came in at 3lb.101/2oz. Thats the biggest Rabbit I,ve seen taken.....Unfortuneately I,m in the wrong part of the country for Hares............. She took two females today...... A little bit peeved,as I,m after Squirrel, but I think she,s just about had them all from this wood.... Time to move on to another I think... 22 Squirrel,9 Rabbit,2 Mice,1 Ferret. Cheers Allan. Yeah, that was the question... I was just wondering if cottontails and jacks were two different species of Rabbit or one is a Rabbit and the other a Hare, which is a totally different ball game.I,m also curious about the size and weights and also Habitat. Cheers Allan... WHC...U.K.

Well where i live we have cottentails [rabbits] and no jackrabbits or hares at all. The rabbits here prefer edge habitats [field meets woods], overgrown fields, pretty much anywhere there are briar bushes.
Other parts of the US there are Black Tailed Jackrabbits, Swamp rabbits, white tailed jackrabbits [also called snowshoe hares i think ], there are also 2 endangered species of jackrabbit i think one is hte whitesided and i dont remember the other

Ethics make the individual, not the other way around.
Down here in Texas we have the regular cotton tail rabbit which is a 2-4 lbs rabbit. We then have the swamp rabbits and they are a larger variety than the cotton tail weighing about5-6lbs. we also have the blacktail jacks here as well. They can weight in excess of 10lbs. I beleive the white tails, which are a more northern species, can weigh more than that.

Cheers lads......... Thats a big selection of different Rabbits and Hares...I suppose that would be natural for a Country so large.Cheers Noel for the weights in Imperial.......You know I dont understand grams I,ve tried out a new wood for the last few days as I,m off work until Weds.....There aint many Squirrels, but Rabbits.....Jeeeeeeeessssh.....The place is infested. She took another two today. As I ran in to dispatch No.2,another one bolted from literally under my feet as I got to the Hawk..Its loaded... If any of you Guys think about a holiday this side of the pond and want to see some sport,UK style, just let me know....... Youd be more than welcome... Allan. WHC.U.K.
Alan, I'll be ther in the end of May 06' Not sure if ya'll will still be hawkin at that time but I would still love to visit, I go regularly over to the UK for the Isle of man TT races. We do use grams. I only weight my bird in grams. It seems that ya'll tend to use the pounds and ounces ie: rt weights 2lbs 4ounces where as we would say 36 ounces or 907 grams.

other than weight, rabbits run much differently than hares, hares will not look for a burrow to hide in generally , cottontails and other smaller rabbits will, Jackrabbits will try to out run any hawk or falcon, I hunt white-tailed jacks with two falcons and 2 salukis up here in Canada
