I have a Dogtra electronic collar. It has made all the difference in the world with my English Pointer. When I got her she was 4 years old and fully trained for field trials. She was a big runner and when I would take her out to the field she would run about 600 yards before she would even think about turning. The guy who sold her to me said that she took off one day and he couldn't find her for 3 days. I bought the collar that has the beeper and the shock on it. I worked with her in the field to show her that the beeper meant she needed to turn back towards me and work closer or the next thing she would get is the shock. I very rarely have to use the shock at its lowest setting anymore. She is working about 150 yards in front of me now, which is OK if your bird hunting, but, she needs to wotk a little closer for a falconry bird to be effective. If you decide to buy one, be careful. The collar can deliver a shock that can hurt the dog and if you do that, the dog may fear the collar. My dog loves to see me with the collar because she knows its time to go out to the field.
Thanx Raptrlvr I have a 3yo GSP. she works way too far ahead & loves to chase rabbits. It can be anoying when the falcon is waiting on, the dog is on point, ypu run in for the flush & bang out pops a rabbit.

I used one on my new Jack russell for about 15 minutes and I was able to break him of a bad habit already. I plan on going out to by my own as soon as I can afford it.

An E-collar is easy to use to break a minor bad habit . However to use one for more complicated training ie hold a point is more tricky. You have to know what you are doing or you can easily ruin your dog.
My dog is pretty good on the point, but, she does like to creep in on the bird. I usally tell her to hold and she is good and holds the point. My big problem is that she was trained to retreive the bird once it was shot so now every time the bird takes off she wants to go get it. She also sees airplanes and thinks its a bird and will chase the hell out of the plane. I have decided that she is not going to work out as a falconry dog so I bred her to a really nice male that is doing great on the field trials. This is the 2nd time I have bred her to this male and the first time she had some great puppies, but, I didn't keep one and sold them all. Now that my Austrailain Sheppard is getting old, its time to keep a puppy for myself.

Have you tried anything else. The Dogtra had the features that I wanted and it has worked well for me. I wanted mainly for the dog to learn to work with the beeper and not the shock. I have heard good and bad about the TriTronics and the same with Dogtra. It just depends on what you want the dog to do.
Currently I am using an innotek model on my Jack Russel and it is to the point that he only behaves when the collar is on him.....Little bastard learned quick.....

Yeah working at the pet store we always had fun with these collars. We sold only innotek, because we felt they were the best. My boss has three jack russels and he swears by them. If you really want to try the collar on yourself just so you know how it feels, feel free, just don't do it on your neck, dogs have extra skin there that we don't. Just a little note. lol from experience? maybe...

Based on what I know Dogtra, Innotek and TirTronics are all good, reputable brands. However, I have found that TriTronice holds up better and longer than the others and TriTronics customer service is great. I know a some guys that have used Innotek and Dogtra with good results - but I also know of a bunch that have had issues with them - ESPICALLY with WATER/DUCK dogs.
I can't recall hearing of one major problem with TriTronis and I'm about 99% sure they have been around the longest, since the late 60's.
Before I got my Dogtra collar, I talked to several of the local trainers. I live right by the shooting/training area and dog training is a big buisness here in this area. I heard that there were some battery problems with a couple of the units and that they were constantly having to send them in for replacement. I decided to go with the Dogtra because of the trainers I talked to, it had the least problems. I don't use my dog where their is water and several of these trainers were working dogs that are constantly in the water. Such as Labs and GSP. As far as what is the best, I would assume that it would vary with every person you talk to. It is basically a personal preference.

I just started using a TriTronics on my dog. I've only had it on her a week and it's like I have a whole new dog. I considered the Dogra collar, but got this one because I can control three collars with one remote. I only have one collar now, but I like having the option. It also has different options like tone only, continuous, and momentary shock. Greta loves when I pick up the collar because it means she gets to go outside. I love that I don't have to have her on the leash, she can roam around a little, and comes the second I call.
Since this thread has started, I have picked up a Tri-Tronics Classic 70 XLS collar. I got it when my friend passed away and all his stuff inculding his dogs and the collars had to be sold. I still have my Dogtra collar and between the 2, I still prefer the Dogtra over the Tri-Tronics. I have had no problems with either of these collars. When I take both dogs out, I use the Tri-Tronics on the older dog because she has a little more trained and stays close to me anyway. The younger dog has a yearn to get way out away from me and my Dogtra is good for a mile. I don't know the range of the Tri-Tronics. As I said before, its a personal preference. I can't tell you how good the customer service is at Dogtra, because the collar has never had a problem and I haven't had to contact Dogtra. I guess that speaks for itself.
