I have a German Shepard - both of them get along just fine. Even during the molt when weathering the bird in our yard the dog will lie down next to his perch.
On the other hand, I know of a tercel Harris that just loves to go after all sizes of dogs.
I have my dogs with me from the very first manning session to free flight. The birds are used to the dags and see them as partners. Having said that, i have to train the dogs to honor the hawk when on a kill. Any bird would foot a dog that got too close to it while protecting it's catch. That usually isn't a problem. My sponsor is of the opinion that Harris Hawks are bad about hitting dogs. I hope to find out from personal experience next year ;D. But i haven't had any problems with my RTs.
I would need a hawk first for it to attack my dog ;D! Of coarse that my all change. but of coarse with my dog's reaction to other animals and people he didn't grow up around i would probably be the other way around
I have a rather nice dog that is not aloud to get any where near the hawk, they did fine to start but now the hawk bates at it when it sees it and the dog runs off wimppering, it is a king charles spaniel so it's a small dog and I would be killed if it got hurt by the bird.

It's all in the introduction. You just have to know how to introduce them properly and be prepared to strip the bird off your dog. Doesn't always work, but it does for the most part. The key is to ALWAYS have the dog present during the early stages, ALWAYS!!! -Joe
For me being an apprentice getting a half way introduction was fine for the dog was actually my worry. the whole family thought the dog would go crazy but after the hawk showed her who's boss it all worked out and still does, the whole thing is the hawks natural instinks to pursue it's prey and with the dog being the size of a jack rabbit she tries to chase it if it starts running, luckily she is always tethered when around the dog. i wanted a hunting dog to go with the hawk, but with my mom not liking animals very much, the hawk was pushing it.

I would have to say that my "team" gets along so well that it scares me! I try to make sure that Caz, my little man, stays out of Bella, my frt's face so to speak. Bella actually lets Cazador lick her talons without punishment, and I actually caught him licking the blood from her beak while she was on one of her first kills while I took my eye off them for a second to get out Bellas equipment. Every hunt, it seems that Caz tries his best to sneak around (me, not Bella) and chew on a rabbit leg. The only time that Bella grabbed Caz, was when he was sniffing on a kill, she was breaking in, and I had a phone call. I tried to get Caz away from her while I was on the call, and when I grabbed him it startled him and he jumped on the rabbit and Bellas Feet. Bella actually sat there for a second or two like she was saying "Your in my way". As I was trying to get to Caz to get him off of her and her kill she gave him a little pinch so to speak. Seconds later, she was eating and Caz was sneaking past me again for a leg to chew on. We have not had an incident since, even though I have to get on Caz almost every day. I am afraid that Caz will think that all birds are this tolerant of him.
I fly passage Harris Hawks. I've never had trouble with them attacking dogs. The are afraid of dogs they don't know. And see no reason for a dog except to help hunt. They have hit a dog that was going in on their kill - but never injured the dog.
The best relationship I've heard of between hawk or dog is between a mutt named Maggie her RT Marriah. Maggie catches rats during the off season and carries them to drop at the base of Marriah's perch in the weathering yard.
My red-shouldered and my cat were friends - they played tag with each other and generally got along. That cat (Eris) also got along with my Kestrel.

Maggie is aging the whole story about her is a tribute to serendipitous events. I doubt Laura will ever find a replacement for her. Yarak

I have had different birds hit different dogs with closed feet out of frustration after missing the rabbit. Also my new pup would get hit if she spent too much time out of the blackberries.
