I'd like to see what kinds of dogs ppl have hunted with, both in falconry and gun hunting. What attracted you to that breed. What are the pros and con of your breed? What were your training experiences? How early did training begin? Etc, etc, etc.

Had a beagle- Pros- great nose, good family dog, WILL find the rabbits Cons- once it is on a scent, it DOES NOT listen. at home it runs alot, and if you have a fenced in yard it will dig
Mini dauchshund- Pro- great nose as well, excellent family dog, finds the bunnies, can fit in REALLY small places, listen very well Cons-dont get a short coat, make sure it has long hair or the thorns will tear it up! Goes down holes, so if you dont like that, dont get one. My sponsor has a bunch of mini dauchshunds, along with most other rabbit hawkers out here. Great dogs IMHO

Ethics make the individual, not the other way around.
Jack Russells. Great for treeing squirrels. Very active dog needs lots of excersize but will listen to commands well. Trains easy, and will keep going all day long kinda like the energizer bunny. I watched one climb up the inside of a hollow tree to get a squirrel. Really tough dogs. They kinda remind me of little hovercrafts as they move so much they don't really have much contact with the ground ;D
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion................ and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish."
I have a beagle that I got at six weeks of age. I started training the basic commands right away. At four months after his shots were complete I started taking him out in search of rabbits. He is now six months old and will tongue on a hot line and circle rabbits back to me if they don't hole up or he doesn't lose them. The instinct to hunt is great in beagles and makes it a lot of fun to watch how excited he gets when he is on a line. Beagles are very affectionate dogs but can be quite stubborn. He learns quickly but will test you to see what he can get away. I have been firm with what I expect of his behaviour and this works for me. Other than that he is a clown with great stamina and an all around great dog.
Never hunted with a dog before. Wait thats a lie I tried once some twenty years ago, OKAY!! It was more than 20 years ago shheesh give a guy a break Anyway it was a samoyd ,blue heeler cross. he could heard hare like a sun of a gun. only they always went buy me so fast that I couldn't get a shot away. Thats okay he didn't need me to catch hares anyways. So this spaniel will be my first true hunting dog. A cosker spaniel for its size.
I found this link. Looks like lots of experienced falconers. Devoted to falconry dogs training and hunting tactics. groups.yahoo.com/group/falconrydogs/
I'm traning a Small Musterlaner (a german dog). its an all around vertile hunting dog. she great with the red tail and the harris. she taining on fur and feather and doing great and her water work is out standing. she has a great nose and thats what I paid for and she is very smart. leans very quickly. I plan on getting another SM soon. to work with my bird. I have serval people who want one of her pup. will see. she works well with other dogs and other raptors.
At the time of this writing, my GSP is a rabbit chasing fool! He runs them so far and so fast that a hawk doesn't stand a chance of getting near one! But wait... wait until i get his e-collar on! I'll break that habit in short order! <evil Grin>
I think I'm going to start training my dog. He's a Brittany crossed with all sorts of things but loves birds, bunnies, etc. I hope it works out with him!
