I'll get my license in roughly a month and then I will begin trapping, so I'm not quite an apprentice yet. There is much I still don't know, so any help/insight/suggestions/opinions are all welcome. I've seen many perches, but I'm most fond of the taller ones, especially the rotating ring and tee perches. I've been looking for one, but I've only found the tall spike and the lower perches separately so far. I'm assuming I'd buy both and fit them together somehow? I've also noticed the prices for these special perches, and while I could save up for one and get it within three paychecks, I began to wonder if making one would be cheaper. The problem would be finding the right materials, and then the mechanism of allowing it to rotate without coming apart and able to resist the bating of a large raptor like a redtail. I'd prefer one that could stake into the ground so it would be more portable, but would it make a difference if it had a platform at the bottom? Could I build one out of lightweight material such as aluminum and have it still be functional? If anyone has any plans drawn up somewhere that they could show me on how to make my own rotating perch, ring or tee, that would be most helpful.
