I haven't tried this yet but I still need to put perches up in my mew and my sponsor is doing an abatement job in Miami starting today. She recommended PVC covered in astroturf, which I could do, but I wanted to know if I could put large parrot perches up in the mew instead. This is for a redtail. The perches I was looking at were hacked off of a tree limb and had the part that attaches it to the bars of a bird cage added onto it. It's thick enough and long enough for a redtail to sit on it comfortably, but my question is will that mechanism on the end of the perch keep it attached and stable on 1/2" electrical conduit placed 2" apart from the center of each bar? I don't want to run out and get these massive perches if it's not going to work.
My redtails have been very hard on their perches. They tend to land on them really hard (I assume we are talking about a free lofted hawk here). I tried PVC, but ended up going with closet pole wrapped in daisy Mat.
As much as those parrot perches cost, I would avoid them just for that reason. I think your hawk could break them off the mounts.
