Today, while I was on my trip to Home Depot to get some gear for the season, I came across this material. It's a ring you wrap around the base of a tree. It's designed to keep stuff from growing but let water through (meaning it won't retain moisture). It's soft, has a rubbery texture and is about 1/2"-3/4" thick.
Has anyone ever used this as a perching surface or flooring for their mews? Any thoughts on how it would hold up?

I would be concerned about the chemical toxic level of that stuff just in case the bird would ingest it.
I would imagine the chemicals in them would be similar to rubber flooring mats commonly found in mews. I can't imagine there being too many harsh chemicals as it's designed to allow water to reach a plant. Plants are sensitive to chemicals as well. I would be surprised if this was loaded with harmful stuff.
It definitely LOOKS intriguing, would be willing to give it a shot for sure with close observation. Does it list the "ingredients" on it anywhere? Usually that will help make a decision.

I didn't notice any "ingredients" but then again, I wasn't looking too closely. It honestly just felt like it was made out of rubber. This is what I was found on the Home Depot website.

It picks apart pretty easily especially after prolonged UV exposure. I've seen but in use frequently for landscaping around the humid dirty south. I'd be concerned about VOCs / vapors as well as the dye used to color it. Just my 2 cents worth.
