I am an aspiring kestrel falconer in massachusetts and I need some help getting started. I have only talked with falconers with redtails and I am still looking for a sponsor. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
i flew a kestrel my first year, but i had a very open minded sponsor. there are VERY few sponsors willing to put up with a kestrel. they are a delicate bird that most people dont like to stress about. so you have 2 options. option 1 is to look for the sponsor that is willing to take on an apprentice that wants to fly a kestrel, which will probably tak alot longer than option 2. Option 2 is to be open minded your self and be prepared to fly a redtail. this will greatly increase your chances in finding a sponsor, you have already stated you have talked to a bunch of RT fliers already just to prove a point.
please remember you need a sponsor more than they need an apprentice.
So be flexible with your choice of bird, as soon as you make general you will be able to fly all sorts of birds, including a kestrel! i am flying a passage Harris Hawk 1 time intermewed and i have been considering a kestrel again just cause they are fun birds.
since you have already been in contact with falconers i dont know what else i can tell you. is there a massachusetts state club, have you joined that club?
Hello all! I am new to this site and looking into getting into falconry in MA. I already got my hunting license, and I'm going to get my trapping license in Septmber. I do not have the space right now but would love to go to a meet. Does anyone know of any that are open to the public? I would really appreciate it. We all have to start soemwhere right?!
I am also getting started near the Amherst region of Massachusetts looking for a sponsor. Really ready to dive in with both feet, packet fom Mass Fish and game on its way-excited!
I am hoping to get to know some falconers in my area. I find the sport fascinating and would like to learn from those who practice it. I have bought and read several books on the subject. I would eventually love to start an apprenticeship and as I understand it, there is a lot of learning and networking to be done before that becomes a reality. I would greatly enjoy getting to know some falconers, learn everything I can, go on some hunts, and learn some more.
I recently moved to north central Massachusetts (from out of state). Is there anyone in the Townsend, Pepperell, Fitchburg, Groton area who would be willing to let me learn from them? I am willing to travel if there is no one in my immediate area.
