After a few conversations with my sponsor, we discussed me possibly using a leather arm guard instead of a glove. I have a bad hip that gives me problems from time to time, and I rely on a walking stick in the field when it flares up bad.
Due to me using my stick in my left hand, adn me being right handed, I would have ot wear the glove on the left hand. Also, I can't do a damn thing well with my left hand, so switching hands and wearing the glove on my right hand isn't a viable option for me either.
I had thought of putting together a leather arm guard for my left forearm. Does anyone out there in Falconry Land use these, and if so, do you have pics that you could post or are there patterns available?
During my manning of the hawk, of course, I plan on wearing a glove for safety issues, but will try and keep the hawk off the hand and more on the forearm.
Anyone out there have thoughts or suggestions to this? Any input is appreciated!

do what your sponsor says. that is the only advice you need. dont cloud his words with some strangers word you met on the net. killjoy
I understand where you are coming from there, killjoy. My sponsor is all for me using this system, adn did mention that the Arabs use that exclusively.
What I am looking for is if anyone out there uses this style/system, how does it work for them, and what does their system look like?

with this you'll have to keep your arm down, cause if you raise it your hawk will walk onto your hand. I am assuming your sponsor is advising you to have a RT for your first bird as you said hawk. Not sure how this will work out at when they bate they will grab hold of your hand. The Cuffs are for flying falcons. a Kestrel might be better for you in this situation
If you use a glove why can't you hold a stick? I hold onto my stick sometimes while holding my bird once ive been carrying her for a while. Maybe one of the hiking sticks from someplace like sports authority (almost looks a ski pole) with a formed handle that stays inside your hand would work? Could you order a longer glove so the bird sits further back on your arm?

I'm not sure I'm understanding why you can't hold a walking stick with a gauntlet either. Perhaps you could cut the pinky and ring fingers off the gauntlet for additional grip? Switching to a arm cuff after the training period is over doesn't sound like a good idea to me, unless perhaps you only train the bird to the lure and never call it to the fist for food.
Whatever training you do is going to carry into the hunting field and that includes the occasional gripping the hand due to food association. Especially with a RT.
Not to mention anytime you are holding your bird on your fist you'll be holding the jesses between forefinger and thumb leading to your bird landing on the hand after nearly every bate.... and that's when you really want protection. Regaining the fist after a bate almost always comes with a nice squeeze for good measure.
I see you're in Kingman...Will you be at the DHC next month?
