I have a male RT very active in the mews. The shoulder of his wings are very banged up! I think that I have found the source of the problem from the blood splatters on the ceiling bars. I have since covered them with plywood. What is the best way to treat the wounds? I have started him on a round of antibiotics, mostly for precaution. Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANKS, Dennis
Take him to a good raptor vet ASAP. If wings don't heal perfectly there's a good chance of your bird having limited flight capabilities or losing his/her ability to fly all together.

The male RT I had last year did the same thing, tore open the wrists on both wings smacking them on somthing in the mews, I never figured out what. I cleaned them up good and put triple antibiotic oinment on them everyday so they would stay moist and heal from the inside out. They started healing nicely so I let him loose in the mews again and he tore them open again, so I took him to my vet and he said what I was doing to treat it was fine but suggested I try aloe gel, which really worked just as well as the ointment. You're probably just gonna have to keep him tethered at least until you bring his weight up for the molt.

Firstly, where do you live? All hawks and falcons are protected by the Migratory Species Act, and that includes Mexico. You have to have a permit to have the bird, if the pet shop did not have the right permit it was illegal for them to have it. If you can take it to a veterinarian that can treat birds that would be best.

If it is indeed a falcon or a hawk, and you are in the United States, you cannot keep it without a falconer's or rehabber's license. You need to get that bird to a vet and not try to treat it yourself as it may permanently disable the raptor from ever being released, especially with a wing injury. You need to get that bird out of your possession ASAP, if you attempt to keep it and you get reported that is a very heavy fine...and again, could also put the bird in jeopardy.
