I saw him last weekend at the fall meet. Went along with him for a while when he was looking for a prairie or merlin to trap. I've hunted a few times with his apprentice Curtis.

No, I don't think so. I went out Saturday morning with Curtis and Kort (I believe that's his last name? I can't remember his first if so), then in the afternoon with Burt and Callan and several other longwingers, and we stayed out for a good long while due to the whole incident with Layla. Then Sunday I went out hunting with Chris (I think that was his name, memory's kind of fuzzy) and Sabrina to hunt jacks with Harlot. So I didn't have a chance to meet too many people. Will you be at the winter meet?
Yep, I'll be there. I was out with Chris and Sabrina on saturday when she lost her redtail. Cort Clayton is the guys name with the gyr/prairie. Layla was the name of the John Lee's falcon? I heard about it but didn't know the birds name. Where you at the dinner and meeting? I was there with my 8 yr old daughter sitting with Curtis and his daughter.

Aha, okay. Knew his name was something like that! I'm terrible with names. And yeah, I was at the dinner, sitting toward the back with two of my friends who came along just to see what falconry was all about. I was sitting almost right next to Anna, apparently, although I hadn't realized that was her at the time. I'd talked to her online before, but didn't match the face with the name until later. Oops. I'll just have to say hi to her in January.
And yeah, the falcon's name was either Layla or Laila, I don't know how he spelled it, but one of the two. Man, that was a sad afternoon.
Do you need a sponsor before the test? Because I was thinking of having the test done before looking for a sponsor.
Check your state regs to make sure. You don't have to have a sponsor to take the test in Missouri. You do have to have a sponsor to complete the license application process. The test is a hoop that you have to jump through to get your license. Personally, i don't think it has much bearing on what kind of falconer you'll turn out to be, nor does it measure ability or apptitude. I have been approached by people who have taken the test and flunked, a few who have taken it and passed and some who were looking for study material for the test. I know of several who have taken the test, passed it, but went no further. It's a good thing to get out of the way. If you need help, find a mentor.

You do need a sponsor to take the test. Your sponsor has to sign the form that you turn in to ODFW in order to schedule a date for the test. But it is really easy to find a sponsor here in Oregon. Most all the guys in the club are really good falconers and very personable.
Best way to find a sponsor is go to one of the falconry meets. We have 3 each year plus a summer picnic that is coming up near the end of this month (June).
The other way I've seen people do it is to get the sponsor list from the ODFW web site and start calling the sponsors that live nearest you. Several people have done that with Wayne, my sponsor.
Sorry guys I haven't checked here in quite a while. Been too busy hawking :-)
Lauren, those names are correct. You are much better with names than you think. Much better than I am. Chris and Sabrina Fox are the falconers you went with to watch Harlot, Chris's goshawk.
It looks like we are both going to be flying Kestrels this year. I'm going to release Phoenix and get a Kestrel, probably sometime in July or August, whenever I can get all the equipment together. That will make 3 birds I'll have trapped, manned and hunted during my apprenticeship. It will also give me some small falcon experience so Wayne and I can get Merlins next year. Plus I can hunt with a Kestrel every day on lunch breaks, something I can't do with Phoenix. It would be too much to drive to Corvallis every day for rabbits :-(
I'm looking forward to getting a Kestrel. If I get one during the summer months I can begin flying it after grasshoppers and small birds right away and won't have to wait until fall. Woot! I'm already so anxious to get a bird out hunting again.
Last weekend I went with Wayne and the Stoddards out looking for Goshawk and Sharpie nests on Friday. Then Wayne and I went down to Cottage Grove and went out with Burt, John and others so Wayne could climb cliffs and try to get them all eyass peregrines. What a fun weekend.
I live in Milwaukie, Just started my journey into Falconry. I am interested in going to some meets and getting to know the local hunters. I believe the next one is in Burns?

Hi, I am very new to falconry and am looking for a sponsor. I have read many books and studied very hard and I think I am ready for the test as well. I am in Lakeview so a sponsor near the Lakeview area would be best. Thanks.
I know this thread is REALLY old, but I am looking for either a "sponsor" or simply a mentor that can point me in the right direction. Also do these meets still happen? And where can I get the location and dates for them?
