yes of course, but if he goes out hunting he should be able to replenish himself. If not,Ill give him some extra food,I'm just trying to devise the most economical way to feed a future hawk.

Does anyone know the gestation period of rats?
flight I think you will be surprised at how little game a first year apprentice gets. the main problems are not knowing how to find the game, how to set the bird up for the best chances, and just plain out not enough experience with training a hawk. it isn't just a matter of getting the bird to come to you and they just start slaying every animal in sight
as said earlier 1 female rat can pump out 8-12 babies per month. once the babies are eating real food take them out and put the male back in with the female for more breeding. 3 females and 1 male will keep you pretty busy. as for economical there is nothing cheap about falconry I spend 1000s of $ just in gas to hunt for the year. as I said go shoot rabbits in fields that you aren't going to hunt the bird. that will be economical a box of 22LR ammo cost $2.00 that's 50 rabbits for me (I shoot them in the left eye while they are looking at me with the right lol)
Yea i know it wasnt going to be cheap just the Most economical way of generating food for the raptor.theres expensive and then there is very expensive. As for hunting i have a 30/6 and 12ga. both would obliderate small game and ammo is kind of costly.

Ok, sorry, i really tried to not to say anything. But i don't think that obliteration is the objective. Maybe try a trap. i think you said in one of your other posts that you cant shoot in your area. here is a good thread on this board about trapping. And yes the 30 cal may be a little heavy for small game. apfalconry.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=Trapping
Most important is to understand that one is able to shoot rabbits and jacks year round in some states as they are considered a pest. In most states however, you'd be breaking the law if you went out and shot or trapped rabbits out of their season. -Joe
You can get a good CO2 powered pellet rifle that will take down rabbits for pretty cheap too. They generally have them in the sporting section at Wally World, or at Big 5, the higher fps the better. I've been told a 1000 fps will work well on Jacks, I wanna try it this summer, I've got some feilds that are full of Jacks that are too close to residential areas for firearms.

You won't get 1000 fps from CO2. You will have to go with spring piston or pump-up for that kind of speed.
