I would like to know every thing about this bird as i am writing report on them and also i just really like them every thing about training and hunting
well now there a bird in the mew im happy now the bunny slaying beggins
why not do some research yourself if its for school? so people just dont give you all the answers?
Because it's a European Eagle Owl and moreredtailboy is in St Louis, MO not europe.
I've flown one for demonstration/education.
My friend has one and I was around for lots of the imprinting and trainging.
I know I don't want one of my own.
They range from around 4lb to 7lb, maybe more.
They can hunt in the daytime as well as night.
They can't see their own feet (like all owls).
They hunt lots of european rabbits (2lb to 4lb) in the wild but will take on larger prey.
Flying weight is lots higher than hunting weight. At flying weight they are calm and easy, you could let an 8 year old handle them. At hunting weight it's like handling a mal imprint eagle with bigger feet.
When we dragged a rabbit carcase she hit it right away but was the devil to get off it.
We've got quite a few European Eagle Owls at Eagle Heights, one of which I fly in ALL my owl shows, mainly because he can catch food (we think he's the only one in the country who can do it!)
Our one weighs 3lb8oz, so they can go a bit smaller than 4lb...
The further you go North in Europe, the larger they get
The have orange eyes, so they are cruposcualr and hunt at Dusk and Dawn
They have furry feet to aid silent flight
The larger ones can take quarry up to the size of baby deer
They have about 3000lb of pressure per quare inch in their feet
The have silent flight (obviosuly)
They are found across all of mainland europe pretty much, except the UK
They are top of their food chain, sometimes taking Northern Goshawks if they can catch them!
They tried to release them back into the UK, and made a TV documentary on it, but told everyone watching the programme that because it wasn't a registered bird, it wasn't illegal to kill them and so, after producing over 30 chicks, a farmer went out and shot the female!
Where did you get the numbers for how hard a Eagle owl can squeeze? I have a hard time believing that a 3-7 pound owl can squeeze harder than a eagle. I have read that a Bald Eagle has around 400lbs per inch of gripe strength. I just like to see the study that you got your information from.

I used to think i knew some things. But i'm not so sure anymore.
I would say verify all the facts with research use these as a guideline to create a basis idea for your paper and then use the referrences at your library and use credible resources off the net. Call up zoos that might have one of the exhibit. There are millions of resources and knowledgeable people out there but make sure the lines match up.
Here is what I know that hasn't been mentioned yet:
Bubo Bubo They nest on hollow rock legs, caves, and/or old eagle nest. Can hear mice Can live up up 40 years
"There's nothing like the feeling of knowing that you've made a difference in someone's life, even if that difference is a lifetime of nightmares and a fortune in therapy bills." - Marilyn Manson

Thanks for your query about what i said about the Euero Eagle Owl. It seems i was misinformed about the pressure, however i have now researched it and found that it still has a pressure of 1000lb per square inch in it's feet. Perhaps the pressure you found was wrong about the bald eagle...i heard that it was more like 4000lb...

Don't forget to write that they are as useless as tits on a boar hog in falconry.
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion................ and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish."
I love owls, I just can't stand it when sombody gets a barn owl and then think he/she is a falconer.....and yes, Owls aren't the sharpest knives in the block.

Yea, I could shoot one out of a cannon. ......wait,wait,wait...I got it...Find a mad scientist who can transform it into a Harris's hawk....HA!!! I kill me.....

Yea, he'd have to be mad to turn it into a lesser predator, after all the GHO does prey apon other birds of prey(including Reds and Harris hawks). I'm sure the EEO would to if the chance arose
