I was thinking of building my mews with a flat roof. to save on money and time and im not sure if i have the skills needed to make a pitched roof myself since it seems my dad wont be helping me like i planed on. does anyone use a flat roof design. i live in NY and get a bit of snow at times but if it ever builds up to where i think its dangerous to the roof i can go shovel it off like we have to do at camp its only 12X8 so it shouldnt be a problem. also what should i cover it with if i do make it flat? i know i cant use shingles because they require a certain pitch to work correctly any ideas? thanks everyone.
adding a pitch to your roof is not costly at all, even if its just a very slight pitch, its better then none, especially with snow. All you have to do is run a couple 2x4s flat on the high end to create a pitch then run supports with 2x4 brackets for the roof, you can lay some roofing felt on the top then put on a metal roof..easy pm me if you have any questions... hope that helps.
any pitch (As far as roofs) is better then no pitch. If you roof starts to 'bow' and its flat you will have water rotting or rusting your roof away, if it slanted (the more the better, especially when snow comes to play) ... well you get the point
Cost difference is basically, a few boards to raise the back edge of the roof. else its constructed the same way... and if you live in a windy area might want to consider hurricane strips (check your local building code if you want to build to specs)

i am currently picking out a shed for a mew right now and was wondering if anyone thought a steel roof would be a problem. the mew will be in the shade and get partial sun, and even has a vent. i would like to place something like a reptile heating block on a perch since it gets super cold in the sierra nevada mountains. any suggestions or critique?
dont use the heating block it can malfunction and burn the birds feet. there is a fiberglass stuff that looks like the metal roof that would be better. for heat you can enclose the windows and mount a space heater in the mew set on just above freezing
