I completely agree with the extension of the perch from tail damage. But the mew does look nice. One other thing. I would consider some sort of double door especially with that one perch right next to the door, the bird could manage to fly out once it knows it has a chance. Something to consider if you don't want to lose your bird. Better to be safe than sorry, then you'll regret not having an extra door.
Heres some new set up pics... she got a bit bouncy lately while free lofted, so ive sadly had to ground her until i can figure out why she is:
sorry for the blurryness in a few, it was dark in the mew, cant focus well lol
im using a Layman set up that i just got last night when i gave him one of his hawk boxes (didnt have room for both). i love it! I really like Aurelia's that she made me, but this works better for a red tail, its larger, easier to play with.
Why the astro is down... she decided to hop off and walk over to pic at a quail feather...
So, a while back, a members red tail was dragging its bowperch in the mew... so heres what i did just in case... first, the perch is sideways so that theres optimum room on the sides, where the ring ends up, and thus the leash is longer, less a chance of the bird banging its wings and such on the side if she does bate. Also, lamyans leash has a hole to make it so you can have it tied short, i also have that done on her right now.
so i dug down and put the perch on the concrete
and then covered it with about 3 inches of pea gravel, thats alot of weight... then i put the astroturf over it, and sliced a slit in it, so the bow appears up top, personally i think this looks alot better.
and heres how i keep my mew closed...
and heres my latest hawk box!!! one of Steve Layman's which he said hed get after the Cali Meet...
yea, still magnets, stronger though, if your really worried, loop a bungee cord through the perch and to the door... thats what i do at times.
now... on MY hawk box... to show ya how strong they are.. i weigh 150 pounds about...
they are strong! built that way! they need to be! we have dogs jumping up ontop of them, SH!@t getting thrown on them, vests, rabbits, pigeon carriers... etc etc!
nice set up and great looking boxes!! i really might have to buy one when it comes time. you could even start putting a kill tally on the side of it kinda like a journal type thing. or some nice drawings would be nice too
My bird gets real active right at dawn and right before dark. I've tethered him since day one and that doesn't seem to lessen his bating any. When he's down at hunting weight he is more active too.

yea, thatd be the same with Kit, only for some reason, shed actually be flying circles in the mew, perch to perch, and just really not be calmed down and all of that??? also... ive found she has sharper talons when shes perched out... not free lofted...

Yeah, Spike's talons have always been sharp since the day he was trapped. I use a foam matte that I got from lowes that connects like a puzzle under his bow perch. I just hose it off every couple of days. I've been very happy with the set-up.
You can also spray down your birds feet/talons if it's not bathing regularly to help keep the talons sharp.
