I think the reason for the harshness, is because this was all hashed out before. And can you tell who sponsors who. And he did pass inspection so he must have done something right.

Actually, I do not know Dustin and do not even know where Pilot Point, TX is. I sponser Dustin McCoy who is in Bertram and has an 80 square foot mew. He is longbow on this site. I just get tired of all the critical comments and know- it- alls that seem to hang here. They forget that we all need to hang together and support one another if this sport is to survive. If it meets the law then work with it. Many people are restricted by funds or area. Others by home owner associations or deed restrictions. Does that mean they can not be falconers, I think not. I just believe some of those here need a lot more experience before they tell others what to do. If you would like more restrictive regulations just hang in there and keep it up and your wish will come to pass. Yours in the sport, Ed Thomas
Oh wow, my bad ed. I did not realize the different dustins. I know you are sponsoring Dustin but got the user names mixed up. I met Dustin (longbow) this weekend. Nice young man. Any way I agree, sometimes it seems like people only want to be critical of others. I guess it makes them feel better about themselves. There are only a few on here that I really listen to. My respect list is wilded; yarak; weasel; falconboy; and raptrvlr. There may be a couple of others I don't remember. But other than those few I take their comments with a grain of salt.
So my bad on saying this mews has passed inspection, I was referring to longbows.

Dustin McCoy (longbow) and I (Ed Thomas) will be on a Harris Trapping Trip this Saturday in South Texas. If anybody sees any passage Harris Hawks this week please let me know. Since longbows paperwork is not here yet we will be glad to call anyone looking for a passage redtail if we see any. Justin we have you covered. ET
i think its a fine mew. I have a huge mew for summer use, but during the season my birds spend all of there time leashed to a bow perch in my yard anyway. My mew goes unused for like 7 months out of the year.

I'm not really sure what to say to this all, sorry that most of you feel like it's too small. All I can think of is that my sponsor designed this mew. He is more experienced than most people on here, and his dedication and love of this sport is absolutely amazing. So if he says it is a good mew then it IS a good mew. The only people that I would even compare there comments near my sponsor’s have not posted anything yet. Not only that, but no one has given any reasons on WHY it's too small, just that it's too small. No facts, means there's no reality, just your personal opinions. Why would you person feeling on some thing matter to me? Just like a lot of guys like tall, dark, and big breasted women, I like moderate breasted, petite, pale women. See the difference? I like one you like the other, doesn't mean either is any better, other than your personal feelings. Here are my facts: A falconer of 14 seasons recommended it to me, and also used it this past season with no negative effects on his bird. It meets my state’s requirements. I’m not doing this because I feel offended, I’m not. What you have said is offensive, in my view, to my sponsor. A man of great experience and skill, of whom I have utmost respect for. I feel that me being his apprentice I should stand up for his honor and dignity. By saying that mew, which he designed, is too small. You’re discrediting him.
i think people just kind of get some kind of enjoyment out of looking for negatives. People are opinionated by nature. There is nothing wrong with your mew. It is safe, secure and large enough for the bird to stretch his wings in. I only have a large mew b/c i already had a horse barn that i was able to convert. I started with the bare minimum to meet regulations

I just want to make it really clear that I like the like the mews, and was not bashing it in anyway.
I know what it's like to feel the need to defend your sponsors honor. I've had to do it to, to certain people (namely one person, who shall remain anonymous). But good job in both your mews and defending your teacher!
you dont have to defend anyones honor, only yours. if you felt offended , well that would have lbeen nice to know before others decided to jump the band waggon.
we said your mews looked cool but a little small out of curiosity not to be offensive, if you take it that way then that is fine, it is your own insecurities. i already said that i wasnt talking trash, so if you still feel that way, i am sorry but i dont regret saying what has been said.
Falconry is one of the oldest if not the oldest documented sport. there is a way of doing things fundimentally that make things work they way they work. over time we have learned that we can modify the actions we take and the equiptment we hold in our possesion. what works for you is fine and what workes for me is fine too, but when it comes down to it, IT WAS JUST A SIMPLE QUESTION!
just my 2 cents. im going out hawking. i am done with this conversation.
I'm with rage this ranting of yours for the most part is way off base and quite late. You stated 8X8 knowing the size of ply would I can't see any where where the inside measures that, and called you on it but it's a mute point being that you only need 32 sqf as for the years of experiance of your sponcer that is mute as well number of years some has been in the sport don't mean a lot in the long run. The number obirds trained don't mean alot in the long run because you will always be judged by the bird you are holding at the time even if it's someonelse's bird. I have heard no one shoot down your mew only the size and as every state seems to have different regs then the questions are warrented, so put away your testostorone chest thumping and get back to falconry. Once more the Internet proves a lousy way of communicating. My first mew was a hand-me down. It was 64 sq ft. It was well worn. I had to replace the roof, before I got it inspected. Anyone notice the date, trapping season ends in TX on the 31st of Dec. I told Dustin it would be close in order to get his permits this year. He does have the burn and his mew will be adequate. As things progress it might change or need modification both Dustin and his sponsor are well aware of this. He did not get much help and he had limited funds, no financial aide. This thread started out with a group of nay sayers. They persist still. When the mew passes all that humble pie will taste good... I am still uncertain if he will have enough time this year to trap, I hope so. Like everyone else he has had to overcome many obstacles just to get to this point. If anyone else has concerns scroll up a bit and re-read WildEd's posts. Yarak

oh a side note. even though it is a little smaller than some would like it is your choice and i know that when you can you will do something to adjust it. we all do, hell when i made my mew i was lucky to have worked so hard for the summer working the cruise industry in alaska that i got to build my mews the way i wanted. i will take up the idea of an entry chamber, i really like that thought.
lets not have hard feelings, just great hawking days. cause thats what this is all about, weather you keep your bird in a huge mansion of a mew or keep your bird in his GH (not condoning GH houseing). it will all melt away on your first kill.
before I go back and read any of the post that may or may not be responding to what I said earlier after revisiting basic grade 7 geomitry yes it is possible for Dustins mew to be 8 feet at the widest point. That said I shall with draw and read what has been posted. Chris
