Technically, the BC, pigeon harness, etc is no longer alllowed in WA State because the law is so vague and just says "body gripping trap." So now we have to use mist nets, dho gazzas, etc. There is an effort right now to reword the law to say "steel body gripping traps." Check out: wafalconers.org/legislation.htm#Body
Yes all traps that use loops including the dho gazza, mist netting,BC etc are ALL body holding traps and therefore Illegal to use.The ONLY legal trap in Washington state is the swedish gos trap as it is a "box trap" style and envelops the whole raptor.A bownet would also be"legal: if its large enuff not to "hold the body" of the raptor tightly.I have talked long and hard with the wdfg and they basically said" There is no way to enforce this law,in regards to falconry" But they did indeed varify that those are the ONLY 2 traps available to falconers to use. Its Bullology...not Biology.....Shaman
ok... so swedish goshawk... that does almost NOTHING to trapping off falcons. so whats the second one? mist nets are allowed arnt they? and i thought bownets were.
Status: Passed Senate February 22, but never made it out of the House Natural Resources, Ecology & Parks committee.
Senate Bill SB 5319 has been amended again and the original definition of a body-gripping trap replaced with:
"(56) "Body-gripping trap" means a steel trap that grips an animal's body or body part, including steel-jawed foothold trap, neck snare, or foot snare."
BCs are still illegal to use in WA. As it says, it "never made it out of the House Natural Resources, Ecology & Parks committee." I talked to a friend (the webmaven for wafalconers.org) because I was excited that maybe the wording had changed but she said nope. Darn
