Nice catch Kyle. About the size of the jacks we have here in New Mexico only our surrounding areas seem to have a lot more vegetation and heavy bushes for the birds to get through.
Went to the San Diego Zoo last Friday with my Veterinary Class. My teacher is an RVT at the San Diego Zoo and took us behind the scenes at the hospital and at the bird show. My Teacher is Steve Culver, his father is Craig Culver, some of you may know the book he wrote "My San Diego and Her Falconry". Very by chance that I took this class and only after the first day did I know that my teacher's father was a falconer. Anyhow, it's been a WONDERFUL class and the Zoo was one of the class's ending notes.
These are pictures from behind the scenes at the bird show which is AMAZING! All the birds are free flighted and that includes everything from ravens, macaws, auger hawk, harris hawk, ibis, etc.
After the show my class stayed behind and they brought out a male Harpy Eagle which was bred there at the zoo by their pair who live on exhibit. This is the bird's 1st moult.
Here is the show's leucistic redtail. COMPLETELY white except a hint of peach tinting the tail feathers. Was originally found injured and then sent to a falconer who had hunted her for a few years, she then injured herself and wound up with the show. She is used in the Night show. (1500g by the way... )
Here is the mother of the previous harpy.
