<S> All, I'm from North Dakota and just doing some reading and research on falconry. Nothing set in stone yet just will hang and maybe ask a few questions. I know that we have 12 falconers in the state. Craig

I know it's kinda sad, only got the name of 1 guy from ND game and fish to talk to about apprenticeship... I cant even get a call back from him... I don't know what I'm going to do... Move the family maybe... Craig
I also am interested in finding a seasoned falconer to talk to to get some information and a possible apprenticeship. I feel in order to keep the tradition alive its a master falconers duty to pass their knowledge of this art on so it doesn't fade away, especially in this prime state where becoming a practitioner would be a privilege.
Master Falconer doesnt actually mean anything it's just a title and why should a Master falconer pass on their knowledge. Sponsoring someone is alot of work on the Master Falconers part. The Master Falconer then has a responibility and his reputation to keep when sponsoring an apprentice.
As you can see i'm not impressed with the title as it's based on a time requirement rather than somthing that is studied for and earned. Most master falconers are no further on in there falconry carrier than a General Falconer. Most General Falconers do not even bother to upgrade.
The traditon will always be kept alive as there will always be people wanting to practice falconry.
I hope you all find a sponsor so and have fun in this amazing sport we partake in.
It was selfish of me to say that. Youre right it is a big responsibility to take on another person and bird to be partially responsible for. Im still looking for any nd falconer who will give me some information if theyare willing
Where in ND are you located? There are 4-5 of us in Williston that are falconers. Most of us are here due to the boom but we are practicing and at the moment working on getting an association set up. We have a few generals and masters that are willing to apprentice the right people. If you are truly serious about getting started come fly with us. We have a blast and have birds from red tail hawks to several different kinds of falcons. The first step of any journey is the hardest and its always easy to talk about it. Its the follow-through that counts.
Hey there, I hope I'm not to late to join the discussion. I live in ND up by Pembina (bordering MN and Canada) I am a disabled veteran looking to learn more about falconry hopefully through some first person experience. At some point I would be looking to apprentice, but first I would simply like to meet up with and learn about falconry with someone locally. So far, this is the only place that I have found mention of falconers in ND. Please reply if you have any good points of contact. Thank you.
They are a pretty small community up there. I know there are some folks in Williston, someone just south of Grand Forks, and someone in Fargo. I'll see if I can get a hold of an email address for the person near grand forks, I'm guessing they're closer to your area than fargo is.

That area is just booming and you would think more falconers. Mostly construction, energy type people so far. Rough environment, Game, but all private and stressed. Except for that great early duck season I don't know that it would be worth the thought. I remember Bowman as very small, yet full of crazy young people.(in the seventies)
I've been in Fargo a few times over the past few months, and you'd have to pay me a lot to live there. -50 with the wind chill when i was there in January...forget that!

If you wouldn't mind a tagalong some time I would very much like to see first hand what's involved and if hawking is something I should pursue (or shouldn't despite my life long fascination)
