Rob been seeing many squirrels out lately? Im in Chattanooga and we havent had many out except for last week when it warmed up. Hate it since I cant get many going for my PMRT
Rex's 3rd season was going quite well until the end of Dec. We had 20 squirrels and 6 rabbits in the bag, averaging 4-5 squirrel slips per hunt. Since then, our season has fallen apart. A 2-hour hunt now averages just 1 squirrel slip. We have caught just 1 squirrel and 1 rabbit ( I don't count the garter snake, mouse and flying squirrel) in the last 15 hunts! Before 2008, and in our previous 2 seasons, it was unusual to hunt without a kill. Now its the norm. The squirrels have simply disappeared! At first I thought that cold weather was just keeping them holed up but now it seems that the population has collapsed. I wonder if its related to the prolonged drought last summer. Its beginning to affect my enthusiasm. I could have flown today but didn't bother. I don't need to be successful each time but I at least need to see some chases. Without chases, it just doesn't feel like falconry at all.
Give a man a fire, make him warm for a day. Set a man on fire, make him warm for life.

I feel the same. I had Yoda at weight planning to hunt today and it just doesnt seem like there will be anything moving. I like you thought it was the weather but now Im not too sure since its here and in GA with a lack of game. If it is the drought I wonder how long it will take to rebound since there is a lower population number.
I live in middle tennessee (currently smyrna, moving to tullahoma in 2 months) and desperately want to start in falconry, but I don't know where to begin if anyone can give me any information I would love to hear from them.
I live in Missouri but i have family in Nashville. My friend owns a farm in Shelbyville (properly pronounced "Shebvul", right?) I fly my gos on bunnies and the odd quail at his place when i go down there. I'm not sure when my next visit will be, but you're more than welcome to join us, assuming you're a nice guy and all that. What is the duck situation down there? I'd love to fly my falcon, too.
hey i live out near you (murfreesboro) and i'm in the same boat as you but i'm not seeking an apprenticeship at the moment. I manage to get into contact with two falconers from around our area. As it is neither have fired up their seasons and currently have one apprentice each as of now. I'm sure Bob told you some names to look for (or not i dont really know). Just to let you know both of the falconers were extremely nice as well as Bob. They will all be more then willing to talk to you i'm sure but as a heads up they'll want you to pick up some reading material and snoop around in the forums. Thought i would save you the trouble of finding that out yourself. It's fun around here and everyone i've run into so far has been more than helpful to me.
It certainly helps! Those are hunting spots used by the gun hunters, though (if i read it right). What I'm more interested in is finding small farm ponds where the ducks hang out. That's the kind of thing that takes eyes-on scouting. Plus you need to get permission from the land owners to fly there. I have several around here, but i only know one farmer in mid-Tn. That doesn't give me many options.I'm not even certain that the ducks scatter out like that down there. My hesitancy about using public land is two-fold: you have to have the right set up for a successful duck slip IE small water, open land. Secondly, and most important, there are far to many duck hunters who think, even today, that hawks and falcons are responsible for depleting duck populations. Consequently, they feel justified in shooting them. Believe it. It happens. So, that's what I'm looking for. Keep your eyes open while you're out and about. The ducks should be coming in soon. Let me know if you see any and where. I would appreciate it very much. If we can get permission to hunt them, you can go with me if you'd like.

Will do. To be truthful I was just giving the census just to give a general idea of the population here. I have some good idea's where to hunt and once I get my motorcycle running I'll be able to scout more.
lol come to shelbyville and the suronding area there is alot of small game i have a good friend in Estall Springs that is gonna let me hunt on his 4 acres he has a large Creek(stream) and about a 1 acre wooded plot. says he gets alot of small game to hunt there.
