I live on the other side of the state. I live 1/2 hr from OH and WV in NE KY. I got my packet and have been reading everything I can on falconry. Shoot I'm ready to build mews and a giant hood just for something to do.... I cant find anyone near me to sponser me. everyone seams to be on the other side of the state.
Hey, aspiring falconer, I've been researching everything I can online, my local Barnes&Nobles sadly has nothing at all on falconry. I've come to realize that there is only so much I can learn online. I'm looking for a sponsor to help guide me in the process of becoming an apprentice. I would like to be straight forward and say that I am leaving for Germany in march, so in reality I am preparing for when I get back to the states, a mere 4 years away... Once you obtain your apprentice license do you have to have a bird immediately or can you wait a while?
If you're leaving in March for several years, your best bet, IMO, is to just go out with some falconers and beat the brush, see what it's all about and ask questions. If after a season of hunting, and years away you are still interested, that would be the time to get all your stuff together, take the test and find a sponsor. I'll be getting my bird going again in October and get together with a few other falconers so you can tag along sometime. Just send me a message in the fall.
Thank you very much John, I was just trying to get the word out now so that it won't be as much of an issue later. The reality is that I have time on my side, because I know it won't be feasible to start falconry until I either get to Germany or after I return, this gives me plenty of time to learn all I can, and get to know some people instead of just repeating over and over "I'm looking for a sponsor". I would love to tag along sometime, work permitting. What BOP do you hunt with? Where will you be hunting at in October? My wife would like to join us if that's alright with you, the only thing is that we would have to bring out daughter, she'll be about 6.5-7 months in October, is that an issue for you? Hope to hear from you soon.
I've got an eight year old female gos, and one friend has a new male gos and another a couple harris'. We hunt around the Louisville area and near you sometimes. It'd be fine if your wife came, but it's up to you if the terrain is too tough or the weather too cold to carry a small child. Just drop me a line later this fall and we'll work something out.
John, Was it Tony who got the gos? I knew he flew one a couple of years back with great success and that he was looking to make a change after a couple of years with the cast of HH's. If so, who did he get it from? -Joby
Just my opinion as well...but I agree, for now just get out and hang around as many falconers as you can. I would really try to find some falconers to hang with while in Germany. Falconry was real big during WWII for killing homing pigeons. I don't know what it's like now. Good Luck!

Thanks Kenbro, I have been trying to find falconry associations near where I'll be stationed, the only downside is that I can't read German...YET... Apparently it is still really big in Germany, not so popular as in the UK but more so than here in the US. I'm really looking forward to going out with some of you guys and watching these wonderful creatures at work. Thank you guys for your help.
Bull, there was 2 - 3 falconers in the Corbin area. (redtail squirrel hawkers) I'd contact Fish and Wildlife to see if they would give you their names and numbers. They also sent all the falconers in the state a couple years back,a survey for potential sponsers, and would have a list.
