First of all, welcome to the site from a fellow Ohioan. My sponsor was located up near you, so I know most of the falconers up in your neck of the woods and they're a great group of guys.
You mentioned that you worked with Hawks for a few years before hearing about falconry. Were you working with a licensed Rehabber, or doing it on your own? Who told you you needed a license to "own" a bird? We actually don't own them, in the legal sense, and yes you do need a license to participate in the sport of falconry.
Also, Gulls and all shorebirds, I believe, are protected species and cannot be hunted with our birds. Pigeons present other problems, although many folks do hunt them, as well as starlings, sparrows, and crows.
Feel free to send me a PM and I'd be more than happy to answer any specific questions that you might have. -Joe

Hello fellow Buckeyes! My name is Brian, and I live in Mansfield. I'm 44 years old, married with a kid in college. I've been reading everything I can find on the net about falconry, and I've ordered a book from Amazon. The problem is, I don't know anyone who's involved in the sport. Hopefully, you guys can hook me up! I'm just not too sure what's the best way to get started. Somehow it doesn't seem appropriate to go ahead and apply for an apprentice's license, without knowing anything about anything, or without knowing anybody who does. I've sent an email to the OFA, but haven't heard back from them yet. Anyway, in the meantime, I'm just sitting here, trying to be patient. Hopefully my book will be here tomorrow, and one of you guys will take pity on me and invite me out to play... Happy Hunting! Brian P.S. Now that I have made my first post without bothering to read the "read me first" thread, I'll go back and read it...

Welcome to Our ADDICTION, BrianMy Fellow Buckeye!!! I'm located just down 71 in Columbus. There are about three of us down here now. Send me a PM and I'll get you some more particulars regarding the OFA contact, picnic (which will be in October), etc. -Joby
Hey Kestrel Kid, What's your name? Have you joined the Ohio Falconry Association yet? My sponsor was located up in the NE part of the state and I get out with that group quite a bit. Send me an e-mail if you have any specific questions. -Joby

I was a member of OFA and need to sign back up but have not bothered to. I do know a couple of the guys up this way and talk to them rarely. Actually had an interesting run in trying to trap the same bird as one.
Hey guys, Located in Canal Winchester, right outside columbus. 37 year old OSU grad. Work as a senior graphic designer and photographer. I hunt quite a bit for waterfowl, upland game, deer, doves, fish. I've been interested in falconry for many years, however only educated myself long enough to figure out I didn't have the means to properly devote the time, space or money while working my lab. I do wildlife and outdoor sport photography also, so If you life in central Ohio and are looking for some decent photographs with your bird I would happy to assist if I could pick your brain. I plan on joining the ohio association today and hopefully have the opportunity to meet and see some real life training or hunting. Look forward to meeting all of you.
Hi Brandon, Can't remember if we've spoken before or not. There was another newbie about a year ago who lived over in Reynoldsburg and was going to be moving to Canal Winchester, although I can't remember his name.
My name is Joe and I'm a falconer located not too far from you on the east side of Columbus. I'm currently getting ready to fly a 2nd year Female Harris' Hawk over my team of mini-doxies and will also be flying a tercel peregrine on doves, ducks and pigeons.
Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions. Our hunting season is going to be starting out here in another couple of weeks, so you're more than welcome to join me out in the field as well. Regards, Joe Dorrian 614-312-5004
No we haven't spoke, however I look forward to meeting you. Wow on the East side even! Thank you for the invite to watch you work your birds, I'm extremely excited to do so and will definitely be in touch. I received my OFA membership information today and will be mailing it out shortly. The gentleman i emailed at OFA mentioned a member meeting in October, I plan on attending. Would love to know some faces before hand. I've done a tremendous amount of research on the internet so far and have narrowed down some highly recommended publications. Do you have any suggestions as to what you believe to be the most helpful to someone in my state of newbieism. Thanks again....
Hey Brandon, Yeah, I'm only about 20 minutes or so from you. OFA is a good organization to belong to. We have our picnic over on the west side of Columbus each year. Regarding publications, I wouldn't invest too much money in the more expensive titles until you're sure this is for you. There are some basics which aren't too expensive and I can tell you more about those when we talk. Feel free to give me a call tomorrow after 2 p.m. I've got to teach a workshop in the morning but will be available in the afternoon. -Joe

I'm adding myself to the list of people in NE Ohio. My name's Brittni, I'm eighteen. Will be nineteen in October, and I've been studying up on falconry for a while now. I've contacted the OFA and plan to go to the picnic and then join the OFA. I also managed to get my hands on a copy of North American Falconry and Hunting Hawks and am in the process of reading it. Good to see there's quite a few Ohio falconers!
