I live in North East Ohio too. I'm so happy that I finally found ppl who live in ohio. I really need to know what age you have to be. I am 13 now and hoping that it is the age of 14 to become an apprentice only. I will dedicate ALL my free time to go hunting with raptors. e-mail me at devinpowell199@hotmail.com. I know a lot about raptors just didnt get to find out what age I have to be. Reply on this forum or e-mail me plz. Thank you.

Hi Colton, Welcome to a great sporting fraternity!!! My name is Joe, I'm a soon to be General class falconer and I'm located just down the road a piece from you in Columbus, although I do a lot of my flying up in your neck of the woods as my sponsor is located up in Wickliffe.
My first piece of advice to you would be not to start out by asking people to be your sponsor. You'll find that it will definitely give the wrong impression and put people off. Luckily, you're located in the midst of a LOT of great falconers. If I were you, I'd join our state organization (www.ohiofalconry.org) and then contact some of the local falconers in your area. I know of at least 4-5 really good falconers in your area, with one actually located in Medina. We also have a picnic that is usually held in the fall and I'd plan on attending that as well. The real important part is to get to be known as someone who is really committed to this sport for the long run. You'd be amazed at how few people actually make it through the stage you're in to actually trapping and hunting a bird.
Falcon boy, the site owner and moderator has developed a great site here and has actually written an article about the type of scrifices it will take someone in your position (still in high school) to successfully pursue this sport. I don't know where it is but FB will be able to provide you with the exact link, if not the article. Read through this site as well as www.themodernapprentice. com and you'll have a good start.
Also, please do not hesitate to PM me with any questions you might have and if you're in the neighborhood you should feel more than free to stop by and look over my facilities and meet my bird, Ms. GRIM.
Well I handled and repaired hawks for a few years, never knew about this as a sport. Recently I was told I had to have a license for this to "Own" a bird. I am excited to know about the whole falconry sport /hobbie. I am just starting with all the terms and I have most of the basic Equip. I live in Willoughby on Lake Erie so I have pigeons, Gulls and some other kill for eating. Hope to chat soon as i learn more and can at least understand the sport. Be well Doc
