My name is Adam and I live in Rancho Cucamonga and have been interested in falconry for a long time is there any falconers will to let me hang out with them and see what all really goes into it I'm gunna start studying and take the test soon to get it out of the way
Hi Adam, I encourage you to begin studying and take the test this summer. That way you are ready this fall season. Most falconers are fairly inactive about the sport in the off season, but if you can prepare yourself and pass the exam prior to the fall you will be ready to go. I do not live in LA area, but I hear it is very difficult to find a sponsor or even get responses from the community because of the many individuals asking for sponsorship..

Yea I'm not surprised being the volume of people in la county and I'm gunna join the CHC and start studying for my test then just go from there Thank you for the response
I have been there and almost gave up. I had a hawk by the next field meet so it worked out for me. I hope it does as well for you. There are some that get bored or move on to other interests in a few months if not contacted, maybe they get weeded out but attrition, don't be one of those guys.

Burbank,CA
Pre-Apprenticeship, 2 weeks into full immersion of Falconry related studies, obsession, and sleepless nights. I have a Master Falconer who has agreed to sponsor me.
So I'm interested in falconry and still trying to get my parents on board. But i do have some questions
1. Is a weathering needed here in CA? From what I know a Mews is needed.
2. I live in LA and was wondering are there areas where catching a raptor is permitted? If not where would be the closest area?(after getting the essentials)
3. From what I've understood as an Apprentice you trap your bird, train it, and HAVE to hunt with it. So is there any area in LA where this is allowed? Or anywhere near where it is allowed?

Pre-Apprentice looking for falconers in Southern California/Orange County area to help me get started. Been studying from afar for a few years and have participated on a few hunts / falconry experiences. Just passed my exam. Reached out to CHC southern apprentice chair with no response. All advice welcome. Looking forward to getting to know the community!

Hello, I'm Craig from Campbell CA, South Bay Area.
Currently using "Quarantine & Chill" time to reacquaint myself to the lifestyle. Loving themodernapprentice.com and other "new" sources/books & training methods.
Because of horrid commute times and limited hunting grounds, I will choose a Kestrel this fall, only if/when I'm sure I can hunt daily & locally. I have a sponsor, but I REALLY would like to meet locals & spend time in the field hunting sparrows and starlings with Kestrels (or Merlins). I released my Kestrel in 1977 because life got in the way, but my passion never quit. I've known I would only get back into this amazing art and lifestyle, only when it would be fair to the hawk(s), only when I could dedicate at least a couple hours per day, and really get into a consistent routine of hunting areas close to home that provide opportunities for a good slip.
I'm no stranger to the dedication and demands. Started age 10 with a brancher Horned owl, hacked out couple barn owl chicks (that surely would have been eaten by their siblings) while in elementary school. Self taught on the Art, made all my equipment, bag, lures, traps,... I trapped and flew Kestrels & Red Tails by the time I could get my license 1976-77. CHC member back then, and just now.
So,... if we ever get past this lock-down, I'll take the test and be prepared for the October migration. Before I trap a passage Kestrel, I really want to find some decent venues for local hunting, and see by example how it's done in suburbia. I want to do this right, or not at all.
