Wow there are more people from Cali then I thought! I'm in Perris, Socal if anyone were nearby a shoutout would be nice. I'd like to watch a falconer in practice if one wouldn't mind an audience. Maybe have them show me all the equipment first hand. I learn better when I can actually see the object to associate with purpose and name.
Yes, there are about 1000 falconers in California. There are several near you and most of the time they don't mind if you come out and check out the action. You might check out the huge field {on your right as you go over the hill} on Ramona Expressway past Lake Perris heading east. There are several guys who fly falcons and they use that field for training. If you don't hook up with a falconer, let me know and I'll contact a couple of my friends and ask if its OK to give you their contact numbers. I no longer live in California If your available on Saturday or Sunday morning and don't mind driving to Ontario, Ca. there is a group of Harris Hawk falconers that meet at Starbucks on Jurupa Blvd just off the 15 freeway before they go flying. My email is "raptrlvr@aol.com" contact me and I'll try and help you if I can.
I am a forum-lurker as I'm not actually a falconer, just interested, although I'm not in a position to make it happen for quite a few years. Anyways, I'm at UC Davis now. I hate to do this but if anyone in the area wouldn't mind me tagging along sometime, I have always wanted to see a hunt. Problematically (of course, sorry) I don't have a car here so .. that makes things more difficult. But if anyone could let me watch, I'd be eternally happy... thank you. And sorry to clutter the forum with silly pleas like this!
Gretchen, check out the raptor facility that UC Davis has. Charlie Kaiser used to volunteer there before he moved to AZ. I have been there and you can check out the birds they have. They will probably be able to put you in touch with some falconers in your area.
I attempted to volunteer there but they didn't have space so I'm going to next quarter. I know that the director of the place is a falconer. Good thinking though, thanks.

gretchen I don't know any falconers near you but I'm sure there are if you are really interested you should contact will o'dier through the california hawking club. he is the northern apprentice chair for the club and I hear he is very helpful.
Hi my name is Freddie and falconry has fascinated me for quite some time now. I live in the San Fernando Valley (Tarzana) and I was wondering if anyone would mind me tagging along with them this weekend to see you fly your bird(s).A little bit about myself, I'm 23 and I currently attend school at Pierce College and would love a chance to see with my own eyes what falconry is all about. This is my first post so I'm not quite sure what to say but thanks for spending the time to read this post as it's my first one
pm's are welcome

I'll be birdless again this year but would like to get out hawking from time to time if there's anyone in the Escondido/San Diego area that wouldn't mind me tagging along. Thanks!
Formal introduction here from La Verne CA, ( it's pretty much right next to San Dimas, like Bill and Ted's excellent adventure). I'm new to this forum and new to wanting to get into the sport of Falconry but have had a passion for birds of prey for some time just didn't have the facilities to accommodate one nor the time. For starters i want to get into going to events and finding locations were other falconers go to get a feel for how it is done. Eventually i plan on getting licensed and dealing with the government from a year to year basis.
I frequent Renaissance faires as a participant and ran into some ladies with a few hawks and falcons and was interested in what they were doing. After finding out about the CHC and NAFA i started to dive into as much research as i could get my hands on and found this place for starters. It seems like a good group here and I will rather enjoy picking some brains for advice and counsel from time to time.
Here's to some good postings.

Sent you a PM sandman. I have to be the closest falconer to you right now but I won't be here for long. Maybe you can come out with me 'n Zada sometime and help us find some rabbits.

I completely new to Falconry, and really really anxious to learn and get into the art/sport... any help is greatly appreciated!!
My Name's Carynn
Hi Carynn,
UC Santa Cruz has the Predatory Bird Research Group. I know this facility was originally the brainchild of a vet who is also a falconer. Perhaps people there could get you into contact with falconers in the area. I live in the San Jose area and am also interested in falconry. I am currently in the information gathering stage. I also encourage you to go to the California Hawking Club website and read all the great info they have there on the steps needed to become a falconer in the state of California. Good luck!

Thanks Swiftspy
I researched the Raptor center with UCSC (I'm an alumni slug) not to long ago... but haven't made any further attempts as of yet to see what I can do with them...
good luck on your information search! Mine has been rewarding, enlightening, and fascinating so far.
