It doesn't appear that there has been any activity in this feed for quite a few years, but I'm hoping someone will notice my post. I live in Great Falls, MT, and am very interested in falconry. Always have been really, but living in apartments and even in my first home in the city never seemed to really lend itself to having large predatory birds around. I'm currently in a position to purchase acreage just outside of town and build a house, and I am hoping to begin my apprenticeship in falconry before too long. There was earlier mention that Skyrider and Exile were Great Falls locals...but is this still the case? Who can I get in contact with to try and find a sponsor? Thanks folks!
Hey JD - I know this is a little delayed but there are a couple of falconers out around Cascade -- I'll PM you their contact information. Don't know anyone closer We're few and far between in this state!
I'm not positive, but I don't believe "Exile" practices falconry anymore, or even where he's located these days. I've released my hawk for

I’m wondering if there’s anyone from Montana still occasionally visiting this board. My 12yr old son and I are just in the beginning stages of preparing ourselves to apprentice. I’ve long wanted to do this but only now at 41, am I in a position to practically pursue this endeavor and an intense interest in Raptors is one of the few things that gets my son’s head out of electro-tech-land. Since an interest in falconing seems to be one of the few overlapping interests we share, I think we are both excited about sharing this adventure.
Anyhow... we are studying the process now and starting to reach out to others. Also starting to gather reading and study materials for the licensing test. Our goal is to be ready for an actual bird in two years (2020), or perhaps even next capture season in 2019, providing we can find a sponsor that soon.
We are located in Anaconda, but we also spend a lot of time in the Mission Valley as that is where my wife is from and all her family still there. we Are prepared to travel within about a 2-hour radius if we can find the right willing person to work with us. That said, that puts Bozeman, Missoula, Helena, Dillon as our approximate realistic boundaries, although we could push that under proper conditions, especially if our grounds allow us to meet part way between.
My son is a pretty gentle tender hearted little guy. He can be somewhat timid at first and is sometimes a little slow to master mechanical/motor skills. That said, he’s somewhat of an encyclopedia of bird facts and has a knack for accumulating and recalling any info related to birds. I am a fairly quick study in the fundamentals of most things, but alas, once I learn the basics I’m a little slower at mastering more advanced skills. That said, we both have a lot of stick-to-it-iveness for things we are passionate about.
Anyhow... I realize it may take some time to find a sponsor, and what better way to prove our perseverance, right?! In the meantime, if anyone knows contacts or meeting schedules or activities related to the sport, let us know. We’d love to meet start meeting some falconers in person.
There is a montana falconry club [or association] I think, however i don't have the contact info off the top of my head. From what i recall being told, most falconers are in the eastern part of the state. Ally [who posted above you] or Skyrider would be your best bet as far as people who are still on the boards occasionally [these boards are likely not the best place to find a sponsor, since they aren't very active anymore]. Best of luck!

Greetings! I am a Montanan looking to connect with people in the area. I am interested in getting into Falconry and any advice would be welcome and appreciated.
I just wanted to throw out a couple additional information and connection points on Montana falconry as up to this point there really haven't been any:
Montana Falconry Facebook page --> newly-created, very general information and contact information for those interested in the sport. It is pretty blank right now but I will add more content as I am able.
Montana Falconers Facebook group --> this is a private group for licensed falconers only. If you are a pre-apprentice you must at least have a sponsor to be added.
Email: Montanafalconers@gmail.com
anybody who wants more information or who wants to connect with Falconers in their area can email this address.
Hope this helps!
