I live in Whitefish, but it's been years since I've been active in the sport. Now that my kids are almost grown, I'd like to get back into it. I apprenticed in Salt Lake under Steve Chingren and Doug Decker.
Welcome to the forum! The very few of us on here are a bit spread out--Ex and Skyrider is in Great Falls, I'm in Missoula and Fletch, when he used to be on here was near Dillon.
Again though, welcome to the forum and glad to have a returning falconer to the sport!

'Evening all.. I s'pose this is my best place to post ^^ I'm Currently living in Montana with my Dad for the next year, but I'm originally from a little country at the bottom of the world called New Zealand ^^ I have for many many years wanted to take a hand at Falconry and now I'm here for a year where I actually can I'd like to give it a go... Any help would be appreciated.. Heheh.. Gotta start somewhere eh?
I know a couple falconers in the Billings area, and I'm frequently in town. If you would like to sit and chat some time, just let me know, and I'll let you know the next time I'm in town.
If you're only in the country for a year, that is not going to be enough time to practice falconry. If you started now, you might be able to get your trapping permits for this fall and train 1 bird, but why go through all the effort and get all your permits and pass your test, spend all the money for facilities for just one year?
I'm not saying don't go after it, but isn't it illegal to practice in New Zealand? It's not something you could keep doing when you go home.

Yeah, I had worried that it may not really be enough time to get much worth out of falconry in only one year. And while it's not illegal to practice falconry in NZ at the moment it is only used as a method of rehabilitating injured falcons because we only have 2 species of Falcon, one is nearing threatened status and the other is quite often considered a pest lol... It's just something that has always interested me, and I may take you up on that Exile anyway, just to at least get a bit of contact with it.. going to be gone the rest of this week though lol.. But I should be around 'til mid-june for a little bit.

AHAH! found found you guys. native montanan, HSUS 20 years. got addicted to falconry by being allowed to work with rescueing a few red tailed hawks. ;D keep on flyin
Are you actively flying right now? And where ya located? Over the last year or so I've met a few more of us Montanans, though only a few browsing the forums. The state Meet is in February and in Lewistown or something, I think, although if you're out west I was thinking of maybe trying to round up some folks for a western MT mini meet in the Big Hole so it wasn't such a long drive, and offered the dirthawkers and micro falconers some options as well. Welcome!

im located in deer lodge and unfortunatly im a newbe, my help has only been medical assistance to birds so i will be the one there making coffee and cleaning the bird poop gotta start at the beginning just like with HSUS. much respect, lilli.
Lilli, Trust me, that work is well appreciated. Gotta start somewhere, right? I worked at my current vet while I was in highschool feeding, exercising and cleaning cages. Eventually got to the point where I did most of the meds and IV fluids on the night rounds but I can't imagine how the clinic would have functioned without people there to do that job.
If you've got a passion for it, this will be some good experience in handling and husbandry. Are you working on studying for your test?
Deer Lodge isn't too bad of a drive, if you'd like to come out and hunt some time you're welcome to go. And if you know where bunnies are, I'll even come to you
Good luck!
