suburban hawking is something i'm looking too try (second year with a kestrel, unless my sponsor lets me go ahead for first year). It's legal year round (or so my state's apprentice manual says), promotes a tamer bird, and generally game (especially birds) is rich.
Bobdale; I am as far south as you can get with temperatures in the summer frequently over 100 and as high as 108. I see numerous kestrals on my travels around back country roads on my quest to find more dove and quail hunting areas. As far as I can tell they are not being adversely affected. Hope this helps.

Hawkboy how does 1,290,000 acres sound to you! Is that enough land to hunt on? Hawkboy please look at your online wisconson parks and wildlife at www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/wildlife/ .Wisconsin DNR's Public Wildlife Recreation Lands This section of the DNR Website will give you information about many of our larger state properties that are excellent places to hunt, fish, hike, canoe, or watch wildlife.
Note: We are currently out of print copies of the publication "Wisconsin DNR's Public Wildlife Recreation Land". Copies will not be printed due to budget cuts, but information is still available on these pages.

Wisconsin can take pride in its vast treasure of natural resources, particularly its wildlife. Public lands managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources provide many opportunities and public spaces for you and your family to hunt, fish, hike, canoe, or watch or photograph wildlife. Escape from your daily routine amidst the forests, prairies, and wetland meadows and enjoy the natural beauty of Wisconsin. Since 1876, the State of Wisconsin has been acquiring land to meet conservation and recreation needs. As of 1996, more than 1,290,000 acres have been acquired for use by all Wisconsin citizens and our state's visitors.
All DNR properties, except where prohibited or regulated by rule or statute, are open to a full range of traditional outdoor recreational uses. These include hunting, fishing, trapping, hiking, nature study, berry picking, camping, bicycling, horseback riding, dog training, field trials (dog competition), and snowmobiling. Some properties allow a wide variety of these outdoor recreation activities, while others limit the types of outdoor activities that may be pursued on site. Please use the left links ("Wildlife Recreation Lands") to the help you understand which types of properties allow these activities.
I hope you find a public hunt region near you. Best of luck, Jim.
Only thing I would like to add to this is that I know several people who have had their birds shot while hunting in pulic hunting grounds. If your going to hunt there I wouldn't do it while there is any hunting season going on at the time as there are alot of stupid hunters out there as well as cautious ones. Someone recently shot a Bald eagle and there excuse was that it looked like a dove????Duh......On the "other" list, one person had there gos shot by someone on public hunt grounds and the guy ran off when he saw the falconer running for his dead bird. I really think that their ought to be an IQ test before you can own a gun. Don't get me wrong, I love gun hunting. I have a ranch in south Texas with 2 sections of great land and nearby my wifes cousin has 16 sections where they raise buffalo and train cutting horses. Of all the times I have dove, deer, turkey and rabbit hunted out there, I have NEVER once mistaken any raptor for another animal. I would have to say that someone would have to be blind or retarded to do that. Besides that, I will agree with Jim. If you can't find anywhere to hunt then there are Millions of acres around in the form of public grounds. You will have to buy a special permit to hunt there though. Cheers, Noel

I have a problem with quail hunters around here. They honestly think that the quail population is down in part due to predation by hawks... Any/every hawk. If i were to fly a gos at quail in the public grounds around here i guaruntee that it would be shot if seen by a quail hunter. Quail are scarce with a poor prognosis in this area. But that doesn't excuse the ignorance of the hunters. I can't convince them that RTs aren't putting much of a dent in their precious stock of quail. Heed the word!

Man, that is just depressing! First, an eagle couldn't be mistaken for a dove NO MATTER HOW FAR AWAY...geez, it makes me wish they went to jail, killing our national mascot! The only thing close to that size bird is another eagle or possibly a vulture...which either way is STUPID.....I recently saw my first and second bald eagle (mature or I wouldn't have known for sure! LOL) and they are magestic and amazing and LOOK NOTHING LIKE DOVES. At my hunter ed class several years back I heard of someone shooting a swan claiming it looked like a goose....either way, the class always says identify your target...jsut as in deer hunting, if you are in an area with antler restrictions, you have to be sure, before pulling the trigger. That is why we have rifle scopes...so we can see at a distance!!!
Anyways.....I have more to say, but would like to post my own topic....Just depressing about the public lands....I just think people can be so unethical...but I believe in karma, so I feel that it will come back to them, we just may not get to witness it! LOL....
