I've been reading NAF&HH, just finished the chapter on the American Kestral. There was mention that quail might not be a good prey for kestral.
I would have thought it to be great for this little falcon.
What are your thoughts and experience?

I really doubt that a kestrel would take quail consistently. They are much larger than kestrel and very fast. Quail are best left to coopers hawks and male gos's and the like. For a kestrel, your best bet is to stick with sparrows/starlings/ and grackles where legal.

I have know of the occasional quail being caught with a kestrel, but it is certainly not the only thing to be out hunting because your bird will get discouraged really quickly. Even female sharpies have a tough time with them. But hey, my first male kestrel took i think 6 pigeons (guess, i have it written in my log at home) so nothing is impossible.
He would fly at up to 100ft, then soar over them feeding on the ground and dive straight into it. He just held on for dear life until i got there. I didnt much like it though. I thought he was gonna get fatally injured.
I was wondering the same thing because my family owns a Bobwhite Quail farm and 40 arces where we release them for hunting purposes. I was wondering what the point of a Kestrel would be if you could only take sparrow ans starlings with them. Because you can't eat sparrow or starling. I've heard you can take grackles with them too, but they're not legal in Georgia, and I'm not sure if you can eat them anyway. I thought they might be able to take pigeons or quail, but I wasn't sure.
