OK - but you think they would take them in the wild, same way that a wolf'll eat rats?
I should explain: I'm not a falconer, and probably never will be. I just find the subject interesting (and fancy myself as a bit of a writer...) Bit odd, I know, but hanging round websites asking hypothetical questions should be a harmless enough amusement. Best place to find out about raptor lifestyles.
hi sean how does this suit you crows, rooks, gulls, pigeon(feral),moorhen plus an assortment of other birds. try to get fresh dead ones and feed them to your bird once a week(once it is flying free) and your wee male should associate these birds with being fed up, it worked for me.

My male harris caught a moorhen and a rook on the same day. Both from free flight, the moorhen tried to out fly him in a field (big mistake) and the rook was ambushed as it took off on the other side of a hedge! What avian quarries are being taken by harrises in the UK and abroad?
hi guys, forgot all about this post lol, got my male harris last september and finnished his season in late feb with 21 rabbits. had a few flights at duck, pheasent and loads of flights at dicky birds. but he have been feeding him lots of pheasent over the moult so will try to get him in them first thing next year, when they are still stupid lol
s'not too shabby for a fist season! Whats the bird like?
To answer the topic question - yes the harris hawk can kill stuff like this - especially if you help it, it will grow confident, but there is absoloutly no way that a harris can ourfly a gull or rook in fair straight flight, it has to be ambushed or car hawked or something of the likes.
You probably already know all of this after a season
When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze
couldnt get close enough to crows lol, but did have 1 flight at a magpie, rolf was faster than it(was end of season , so fit) but it was alot smarter and kept corssing inbetween a fenchline. rolf hadnt much hope lol
MHH will catch anything up to the size of a buck Rabbit over here but only if its fit! The key to a good male is Fitness a lot more than Females if you want to have more fun.
As far as dragging prey as in birds into trees that rarely happens in my experience, not with a trained bird unless it has something against you so it can take its prey away from you.
But, In England our Bucks can get big (up to 5lbs) and that is a struggle for a male so you will loose more than a Female but you will get them but will probably loose more. A Hare is out of a MHH range and i would be a little concerned if my male took one.In fact he did once and got tossed 4ft in the air!
Try to feed them on feather and fir and not get fixated on one or the other. I posted a thread recently on which has the advantage a 1-4oz male or a 1lb 8oz. Look at your terrain you are in.If you hunt mainly Rabbit go for Big if mainly bird go for small , if you have a variety go for big and get it super fit, it will get to the kill quicker than a Female and hold on.
But, as in many occasions in the field my Male has grabbed onto a large buck for his life and a long comes the female and stamps on it!
Who is the Victor?
Depends what bird you are flying ;D ;D ;D

During a short period when I was covering a friend who works Bird clearence at a landfill site my MHH got real good at ambushing crows, He realised early on that they could be fooled by not trying to hard untill the last minute, also ground hugging attacks seemed to work as well.
The FHH also has her share of crow kills but also added three Great Gulls.
grappler, i had a few bucks with rolf in his first season, there was once a buck that bolted, and he grabbed it by the arse, i chased round and round for about 45 seconds, no joke. and the rabbit just wouldnt slow. eventually knocked him off while getting through sheep fenching. but it seemed to make him more determined lol

LOL. Yeah they are feisty aren't they. A friend of mine trained his MHH from the start to attack at the head by towing big bucks around and carrying on towing them until he grabbed it in the head. Next time he caught it in the ass and he towed him round the garden. Then after a while his harris realized that to take by the head is the way. Great stuff you would think.
After about 5 avian kills he had a slip at a big buck, he went for the head and my mate said 'watch this'
So i did.
The buck tossed his Hawk over the top of a bank into a ditch. He was OK but my friend really did get a ribbing for many seasons ;D
