Oh ya, forgot to mention something.
When you question people about thier info, they tend to get defensive, and then they get more adamant about what they are saying. They go into more detail, they talk louder, they give out the REALLY choice tid bits of info that they usually reserve.
This gains you more info, and in places like this forum, or at a field meet, it usually attracts attention and that information goes out to more people. In here, flame wars make everyone want to read it. A single post on a thread usually doesn't bring much attention. At a field meet, two guys talking isn't much to look at, but 6 people watching an apprentice talk training with a master falconer, well it tends to draw a crowd hehe.
And even though my butt was puckered, a lot of good info was given, and the master and i still talk, plus 4 people told me they learned from our little debate
Sure did Ooby....They learned what an Ignorant little fool you are.....again....I guess that's like reinforcement huh? I still get a kick out of your posts as they have correct info in them, yet they are misdirrected to help with the point. Like someone who just read it out of a book......But, like I said before...at least I and others get a good laugh out of it ;Dhehehehe

You two guys wear me out. Now even Minca has asked you to bury the hatchet. Weasel, you could at least lighten up a little. You just bash every post now of his. Stop the madness. Yarak
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away
As long as he flames posts I will be there to bash him. If he makes intelligent posts that aren't put forth as the end all be all of methods, then I will gladly be able to have a conversation. Unfortunatly more of his post contain what he thinks is the only way since it worked for his bird or someone said so. I ahve said it a million times to you Yarak, that I don't really care about the experience in answering a question as sometimes it dosn't matter in some subjects. This is in a general sense only as I could say " this method worked for me, maybe you could try it and see if it would work for you"......This is a way that is informative yet leaves the person being told the option and good sense that it's not the only way. If I say " I do it this way and if you don't I think that you need to stay out of falconry!"....Not saying that his wording is that way, but his portrayal of his opinions leave MUCH to be desired. Plain old experience will teach this to a person so bullheaded as he. Like I said earlier and a million times before, when a good post is out there with good info, I will agree and maybe add something to the mix. When something is put out there that is biased in a uninformed way then I will certainly argue the point.....The fact that argueing the point is what he seems to enjoy out of these posts where it takes a turn for "non-falconry" almost on a regular basis. His one sides views and my un ability to let things lay are a caustic mix. Not to mention that he can't keep his word.....like leaving the list.......

Its ok if you miss-interpret my posts weasel. Yours are blatant flames. Hard to miss-interpret those.
You don't like my info, fine, post different info, but you don't. You just flame and call me names. Its like having a kid around here. Ive never said "my way or the highway" never even HINTED at it. Ive simply givin out the information that i have.
I take that back, i did say my way or the highway in regards to shock collars, because i dont' like them. And i think they are a crutch for people who don't have the time or knowlege to simply use positive re-enforcement.
But hey, im not here to impress you, or make you like me, or make ANYONE like me. Im here to offer the info i have. If you don't like it, tough. Flame away. I don't care, you are fun to reply to with posts like this. But it pisses people off when we argue, and you rarely post any usefull information.
So let me get this straight... Your trying to help people Ooby?
And that wasnt a sarcastic question I want you to go into detail why exactly you post here. Being that you claimed you wernt going to come back. There are other forums you know or have you gotten them pissed off at you too?
Noel, for a moment I thought the both of you were going to actually post in the same thread without an arguement. You were out of line in my opinion this time. Just because he takes pot shots at you doesnt mean you should give him the satisfaction of ticking you off.
I apologize grendlesgirl for letting this thread become another debate thread, if it gets any more heated I'll just have begin to become the "Evil Nazi Dictator" Ooby considers me and delete both his and Noel's posts.
alright, i just went back and checked and the score for this particular thread of posts NOT related to RT foot management are: Weasel 2 Ooby 4
No offense Ooby, i really do like it when you do post constructive stuff, you have alot of good stuff to say. And Weasel, you're not helping any, if anything you're instigating and encouraging this CRAP. You draw it out of him then bi##ch about it! It's like eating beans then bi##ching about the farts! Ooby's been posting like he has for so long i don't think we need someone to point it out for us anymore, I figure we all know how to read his posts by now. I don't know about anyone else but if this goes on I'm just gonna stop reading anything by either of you two. Maybe we should just start a thread called Ooby and Weasels boxing corner, so it can all be put in one place and the rest of us don't have to sift through it to find the worthy stuff.
OK.........Just friggin delete everything from both of us. Clear this thread of both our posts....Nothing would make me happier to be honest. Oh, and Minca .....I like beans and I simply deal with the farts.......

Grendlesgirl,
I have a big female passage RT this season.
Just a few thoughts, IMHO as a first year apprentice...
It sounds like your set up for the bath pan is fine, as far as perching goes (I personally have a short stump perch covered in astro in front of the black bath pan), but the perching on the side of your bath pan sounds fine, as you've seen her perch there. I can say that unless I accidentally catch my bird in the act, or go to get her out and find a hint that she's been wet, I do not SEE my RT bathe. I've also heard that some birds will only bathe after a kill. However, I have witnessed other RT's bathe in my living room...they are all different. I don't think age is a factor in it...she was on her own at one point, and that's something she would have been taught by her parents (not an imprint) and natural instinct.
I honestly don't know if they can tell the depth of the water, as I am not a redtail(I suspect they can), but I can say that, observing from their nature, that some traits they have, like excellent eye sight, do not translate into knowledge of what they're looking at. Example: the bird can plainly see the leash that is tethering them to their perch, but they will still try to bait and bait off of it, like they don't KNOW they're tied to it. I've witnessed the same behaviour as far as figuring out the lure. They can see the meat produced on it, but they may be uncomfortable with the surface it's laying on (tarp vs. sheet vs. carpet vs. regular grass, etc). Hopefully, they eventually figure it out, if they don't initially take to it. Sometimes, it takes them a while for that light bulb to go off, and they make the connection. Remember, what we're exposing them to is not what they would naturally encounter.
I also think some RT's will take to some manning and husbandry methods easier than others. Example: some will take to the hood easily, and others won't. Again, I think it depends on the individual bird...use the same method on two different birds, and you can get two different results. If you have a good basic outline to start with, that has worked with others and is passed down, then you have a great start. You just may have to make some modifications to fit the individual bird. It sounds like you're doing a good job of trying to gather information and figure that out.
As far as her feet being dry and cracked, I agree that some of that can be natural. But, a good, varied, healthy diet can help with that. Vitahawk is also a good supplement. Example: a girl wants healthier, longer nails or hair...take vitamin E! Being healthy all around will also help heal those old blisters. But be careful if they are fresh blisters, as I'm sure your aware, to prevent turning into bumblefoot. Instead of daily soaking of the feet, you could try getting a wet rag soaked in epson salt and laying it over their perch, maybe in the giant hood, and having them stand on it to treat the bottom of their feet may help. I was unclear as to if she was running back and forth in the mews on the ground or on a perch, by the window or not? My RT took to the mews great initially. She'll sit in there with a foot pulled up, perfectly content. When I started hunting her, though, she would get very active in the mews at certain times of the day...like hunt me already- I'm hungry, plus the visual stimulation of the windows. I have a long perch covered w/astro on the front window. She runs back and forth on this one. She also jumps up to the top of the window, grabs the bars, and slides down. I have noticed the same thing with my RT having duller talons than when she was trapped, and starting to get very minor sores on the bottom of her feet. I believe this is from the bars on the window, not the perch w/astro. I personally have not heard of the brick thing. I am currently re-modifying my mews...raising the perch at the window, adding another perch in the mews, and hoping this discourages the bar grabbing. I've also witnessed birds that, no matter what modification, they will not settle down in them. I have heard that, sometimes, this is a typical first year bird behaviour, and that, after their first moult and first year hormonal change, they settle down. I recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it, if that is possible. Again, every bird is different!
Good luck in your pursuit of knowledge to become a better falconer, and to create a better environment for your Red Tail. ;D I hope I gave some information that will help ya out! Feel free to ask/comment...
Has anyone tried using a paint roller as a temporary perch ? It could be made moist & perch the bird on it for short periods of time. Assuming you'd removed the handle & secured it.
Yes, I know a falconer that uses one for a T perch in the field. She has the telescopic handle so she can put the bird up high. The roller part is held from spinning via a tie wrap attachment

Hi!
Wow this thread got weird!
I remodeled the mews about a month ago, padded under each perch with soft foam under the turf, put in more perches and within a MONTH her feet have healed great. Under the floor is mats between cement and turf and already I can see and feel her talons getting sharper. Currently she is moultign like crazy and seems to be doing well. When I find a nice branch I will make that a perch in there as well for feet and feaking. Every other day when she is out weathering I give her a shower from a mist from the hose and she seems to like it. Maybe when the weather gets warmer she will take to the bathpan but I'm not really worried about it. I have one friend who's Harris Hawk drinks from a dog dish in the truck after each hunt! Each bird is different, each situation is different, and everyone has different, and valuable, advice.
