I know I am going to get flamed for this so flame away.
I started out feeding my hawk a variety of quail, assorted birds, mice and rabbit.
Then I read where quite a few people had been feeding their bird beef heart with a vitamin supplement. So I tried it. I have been feeding my Redtail beef heart with Vitahawk for about a month. I also feed him quail and starlings for casting material and let him crop up on whatever he kills.
Now my sponsor said, "I wouldn't do it but go ahead and try it and watch his health for any negative signs." So I tried it. My retail's flying wieght is 910 grams. I feed him 90 grams of beef heart a day along with 1/4 teasSpoon of vitahawk a day (along with water of course).
His evergy has gone up, he is in great health and very alert and full of energy. His digestion seems pretty fast as 90 grams is a lot but I put that to a consistant diet and the vitahawk probably helps regulate metabolism and assists in digestion (don't know).
I am curious everyone else feeds their birds.
Now I already stated I know I am going to get flamed for this because you should only feed them what they eat in the wild, but is it possible we can produce a multivitamin that can give them what they need? I mean is a quail for some reason have exact amounts of every vitamin they need? I doubt it, but its more than enough to survive on for sure. So why can't modern science and medicine produce a supplement that benefits them and lets us replace their staple food? Breeders use it for some reason don't they?
I fly my hawk for about an hour every day, I hunt him 2-3 times a week. He is full of energy, I can soar him with no fear of loosing him. He is an excellent game hawk. I say this becuase I know someone is going to say I am doing him a disservice, but if you are going to flame instead of discuss, at least provide a sound arguement instead of complaining "just because they know better".
I love my bird and I love the sport so I would like to hear discussion on what you feed your bird.
