I have been looking into making a couple of kestrel boxes to promote some of the local families we have around here. I have been researching it for a while also just out of curiosity from when BT mentioned them a while back. Now I know they are suppose to promote breeding and they are usually put up a bit nearer to spring, but could it be possible that the Kbird that I saw use the indoor arena out at the ranch as a temporary shelter when the temperatures dropped Would he use it or any other kbird as a winter home? Or home in gerneral/ place to keep the rain and winds off while on an outpost? I have also read of starlings getting into them and occupy the boxes but I haven't read anything about sparrows using them. Would a sparrow use it? I really don't need to promote their breeding they are the flying rodents here. I was considering putting it on the a telephone pole that now only holds the outdoor light for the ranch. The Pole is situated at the top of a hill that lets down into a pasture with tons of grasshopers and I have seen a couple of small salamanders. Plus it isn't far fom the barn where the Kbird I saw last year use or where the sparrows tend to hang out. What are ideal locations to hang these boxes? I have another pole across the way but it would be harder to check cause it is in a more marshy terrian. Plus what could be ther outcome if I went ahead and hung a box right about now since the birds are migrating a bit, would a bird stop in the area? I believe the one I saw lst year was traveling I haven't seen him since. I have seen another kbird though a small female so I know our area is pretty good for them.
