My new Harris, Ed, cut his season short yesterday by 6 weeks when he hit a concrete pilar while in pursuit of a starling. Here is the x-ray of his left wing humerus that is being surgically repaired today. Not very good chances of him fully recovering, but I certainly have my fingers crossed.......

It looks to be a good clean break in the middle of the bone. With a good surgeon and a little luck, the bird could make a complete recovery from a break like that.
Thats what I was thinking. That is a pretty good place to get a break if it's going to happen. It's not in the shoulder, wrist or a cut tendon. I think you may be surprize what a good doctor can to with that.
I used to think i knew some things. But i'm not so sure anymore.

I agree. Soft tissue injuries are much worse. Look, I'm no DVM or anything, OH that’s right I'm almost 3/4 of a DVM, but depending on alignment of the bone with minimal periosteal damage and good apposition, this should heal in about a month. I would wait about 2 weeks before I tried to do anything with him. A good wrap and a GH are his best friends for the next 2 weeks.

Yea, Greg Moore gave him about 4 weeks in the Mews so he can keep it stretched and at least another week on that to do jumps etc. He is in surgery right now, so I will see how it turns out this evening.

What is the update thus far? Hope it is looking good.
Never settle.

I had a redtail do the same thing with a frozen branch. He actually shattered the humerus into 5 pieces; a pin and physically tying the pieces together worked well. He spent 10 weeks in a box with his wing wrapped to minimize movement. He seemed to like the Bed and Breakfast I was providing for him. After the pin came out his tendons were tight so it took atleast 2 weeks for him to be able to fly normally and then a little bit for him to regain some muscle mass on that side.
I then proceeded to catch about 20 rabbits with him before hacking...
So you should have some good high hopes for the future since a worse case healed perfectly
One thing to note aswell, the experience of being hurt and having me help him seemed to strengthen our bond. It is like we survived a tragic situation together... bonding through the survival of a mutually shared danger... kind of cool
Here is an update on Ed. He is sitting happily in my living room for the next 2 weeks until the bone mends a bit and then he goes into the mews to exercise the wing a bit. I have a few pictures of the post op and him sitting on the perch at home.

Hope Ed heals quickly. I moved Joe out of the house and into the mew Saturday. He is at 622 today and flew to the lure well on the creance. I will be hunting him in a day or two. My thoughts are with you and Ed. ET
Went to the vets office yesterday for a check up and he said everything looks fine and Ed will be getting the pins out in about 2 weeks time....Then a week or so in the mews for muscle/bone healing from the pin removal and it's back off to the field!!!!.Only problem is that he started a full on moult again....The livingroom is full of feathers.....He dropped three secondaries yesterday alone.....Just my luck....
