Hi everyone,
My friend's red-tail recently died from avian malaria. The vet here (western Washington State) said she's never seen avian malaria here and she's a bird specialist. She talked to the zoo, other vets, etc and they had not had a case either. The bird went to the NAFA meet in NE but I think she was acting a bit off before then. Has anyone had a bird diagnosed with avian malaria and if so, what was the outcome?

By what I have recently learned malaria is caried by misquitos and during the 1800's it killed many people this could be very posible that a bird could be exposed to this desease, though it is hard for mammal deseases to be changed to avian deseases. I have never heard of this, but I am a pre apprentice so I don't know. Also for people the results are chills and fever so if that is so with birds your main precautions would be to watch for signs of fever.

crbhawking. the malaria that infects humans and the one that infects birds is two different kinds of malaria. otherwise health departments would be going crazy as it is found where i live in MN. Larium treat it well though
Signs in raptors are frequently confused with asper (labored breathing, depression, weight loss, anemia, anorexia). So, unless a blood test is done specifically for the Plasmodium relictum micro-organism on every bird they see, most vets don't catch it.
